“You are commanded to produce each and every gift given you by the Defendant.” This is what Monica Lewinsky received from the court in her subpoena in the Monica Lewinsky/ Pres. Clinton scandal. You may have forgotten all about Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton courtesy of her merciful silence in the intervening decades. Until, of course, your memory was forcibly jogged courtesy of her decision to pop back into public life in May 2014. You may have remembered Monica Lewinsky all those years and didn’t even need her reappearance to stimulate a flood of recall.
Chances are that you do not remember quite so starkly the other Monica Lewinsky of 1990s government. Perhaps you have managed to recall vaguely that then-Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was a leading figure in the Republican moral judgement that against all odds actually ended with Pres. William Jefferson Clinton becoming only the second Chief Executive to be impeached by the House of Representatives.
Since Monica Lewinsky’s decision to re-enter the public consciousness has gotten everyone talking about those crazy days of sex scandals in the Oval Office anyway, what’s it going to hurt to remind you of where Newt Gingrich sat on the moral spectrum.
“You are commanded to produce any and all gifts received by you from the Plaintiff.” These are the words from the subpoena received by Callista Bisek in the case filed against Newt Gingrich by his wife at the time that he was having an affair with Bisek. While the discourse filling the air amid the return of Monica Lewinsky to public life like thick smog capable of choking all the life right your lungs is focused on the inexcusable behavior of Pres. Clinton, it would be entirely remiss not to at least include in that discourse the subject of flat-out hypocrisy on the other side. For those not aware, it turned out that all the time Newt Gingrich had been bashing Pres. Bill Clinton for a sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky, well, he was cheating on his then-wife with a woman half his age. Apparently, the 51 year old Newt Gingrich’s favorite place to rendezvous with the 27 year old was at the cafeteria of the Supreme Court of the United States.
What makes the hypocrisy of this Newt Gingrich all the greater is that just about every one of his Republican witch hunting colleagues s back the late 90s were more than aware of Gingrich’s affair with Callista Bisek. The 27 year old Callista Bisek. Who was having an affair with a 51 year old married man who by day was telling the world what an awful human being William Jefferson Clinton was. Of course, the big difference is that William Jefferson Clinton stayed married to his wife instead of divorcing her and marrying Monica Lewinsky while Newt Gingrich divorced his then-wife and married the woman with whom he was cheating on that wife. That’s the big difference. That’s why Monica Lewinsky’s return to public life in May 2014 became such big news. It doesn’t explain why Newt and Callista Gingrich nee Bisek did not, as of the writing of this article, yet have any public comment on the return of Monica Lewinsky. Doubtlessly a touchy issue, but surely their input would have been newsworthy than any of the pundits representing the viewpoint of their respective parties straining to hit every one of their talking points before the commercial break.
