May 25: Rockies (27-23) 0, Braves (28-21) 7
Behind an impressive start by young righty Julio Teheran and a pair of home runs by Evan Gattis, the Atlanta Braves cruised to a 7-0 victory against the visiting Colorado Rockies. Teheran went six scoreless and Gattis knocked in three runs.
The Rockies threatened out the gate with back-to-back singles from Charlie Blackmon and Michael Cuddyer to start the game, but were unable to capitalize.
It was the Braves who struck the scoreboard in the early going as they plated home one run on Gattis’ first dinger of the game in the bottom of the second. He worked a 2-2 count and belted a two-seam fastball offering from Franklin Morales over the center-field wall for the 1-0 lead.
That was the all the offense Teheran would need as he was dealing. A second-inning single by Charlie Culberson was the only blemish on Teheran’s box score from the second to the sixth frame.
In the fourth, with a narrow 1-0 lead, Gattis delivered another big blow to Rockies when he connected on his 10th homer of the year – a two-run shot to left.
Just one inning later, Justin Upton pushed the Braves lead to five when he delivered a big fly of his own. He sent a 2-2 curveball from Morales over the left-field fence for a two-run shot – knocking Morales out of the game.
In the top of the sixth, the Rockies got two runners on base with two outs but were unable to score as Teheran struck out Wilin Rosario swinging to end his sixth and final scoreless frame of the night.
Still sitting up 5-0, Atlanta put the finishing touches on the game when Chris Johnson belted the team’s fourth home run of the game – a two-run shot to left-center – to make the final score 7-0.
Luis Avilan pitched a nine-pitch, 1-2-3 ninth to solidify the win for Teheran and the Braves.
Morales ended the game with 4.2 innings under his belt, allowing five runs and three home runs.
Meanwhile, Teheran gave up just four hits and struck out seven in his fourth win of the year.
Important things to note: The Braves scored all seven of their runs via home runs – two from Gattis, one from Upton and one from Johnson … Neither team recorded a hit with runners in scoring position as they combined to go 0-for-9 in the game in that department … Teheran lowered his ERA on the year to 1.77 with his six scoreless frames.
