It is bracket time and we all want our team to kick the snot out of the big mouth braggart’s team in the next pod. If you want to teach him a few lessons, go with these five teams.
Florida. Today, they are 29-2 and they blew through the SEC undefeated. That is the mark of a champion. How good are they? Bleacher Report did a comparison of this year’s team with the 2007 National Championship team. I won’t tell you who they picked, but let’s say 2013 does well.
Kansas. Against top twenty-five teams, they are 7-3. Obviously, that is the record of a winner. Beating Texas by thirty-one is significant, while the loss to West Virginia should not have happened. I don’t think they can beat Florida, but they will be in the mix for a championship.
Michigan. This turns my stomach since I am a Buckeye fan, but this year the Wolverines are the best of the Big Ten. They are led by Big Ten Player of the Year Nik Stauskas and they have 8 wins and 5 losses against teams ranked in the top fifty when they played. The Big Ten is the toughest basketball conference and being the regular season champ says a lot.
Villanova. At the time of this writing, this team has won 28 of 31 games. That is a great record, but they lost their one game to Syracuse and were blown out twice by Creighton. Going 16-2 in the Big East is impressive and I am sure they will go far in the NCAA Tournament, but those losses make me think that they will not win it all.
Syracuse. Yes, it is tough to put them below Villanova, since they beat Nova, until you look at the way they ended the regular season. And, some are concerned about their scoring margin. They are a mystery. Cuse started 25-0, but then stumbled at the end winning only two of the final six, with two losses to good teams and two losses to really bad teams.
If you want to do well in your tournament bracket, take these five teams to go far. I am picking Florida to win it all. But then there is also Kansas, maybe Michigan or a tough Villanova and Syracuse might come back to life. Picking the National Champion is not easy, but it will be one of these five.
