Although bright colors are often part of summer fashion trends, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for some black and white looks. The 2014 spring and summer runways had plenty of fresh ways to incorporate black and white into your wardrobe. This year, try these black and white summer fashion trends for 2014.
Black and white stripes, polka dots and floral patterns are typical designs used for black and white fashion. Yet, for summer 2014, expect to see some of the unexpected. This may mean unique patterns like stripes going up, down and diagonal….all on the same skirt. I like this unique black and white color-blocked dress from Ivy and Blue. The diagonal nature and the geometric cotton eyelet colorblocking is quite different than anything I’ve seen.
Vogue says black and white “geometrics” were all over the “spring/summer 2014 catwalks.” Indeed, shapes look crisp in black and white. This geo dot mini skirt from Banana Republic has a repeating pattern. You can pair it with a black and white shirt or throw on a bright color for summer. In the fall and winter, a skirt with a black and white pattern can easily transition to colder weather.
If you have a basic black or white tank in your closet, you can easily purchase some beautiful shorts or a skirt to bring your summer wardrobe up to speed. A printed or solid fitted black shirt would look lovely with this croquet party midi skirt. Likewise, this honeysuckle vines embroidered blouse is so beautiful, it only needs some basic black shorts, and shoes, to make it into a complete outfit.
Maxi dresses are everywhere. A black and white maxi dress in a lightweight fabric is great for summer. Try this Meter Stripe dress from Anthropologie. It features spaghetti straps, pima cotton and various sizes and directions of stripes. The pullover styling makes it easy to put on. The material makes it perfect for packing in a suitcase. Pair it with some gladiator sandals and you’re good to go.
Unique layers were something else seen on the runways. From asymmetrical layers to a solid dress with a sheer hemline, these unexpected layers add something special to an outfit. For work, try this double layer hide print dress from Jonathan Simkhai.
Vogue also says checker boards are big for summer 2014. You can go head-to-toe or add in one checkerboard piece. Since crop tops are in for summer, you can combine the two trends with this fun crop top from Need Supply.
If you want to add some color into your outfit, a colorful pair of shoes or a handbag would go well with most of these black and white summer fashions for 2014.
