Big Bear Lake is a wonderful place to vacation. It is suitable for couples, families with children, and an adult-only vacation. You will arrive at a place that has good clean air and a hospitable environment. They offer accommodations to suit anyone’s tastes and budget. If your an outdoors person, there are camping and recreational vehicle areas. Many love the idea that they can watch the stars and smell the wonderful pine smell quietly. When deciding what time of year to go to Big Bear, think about the activities that you are looking to do. There are things to do year round so the choice is yours. In the Spring, the outdoor activities are very pleasant. It is warm enough to participate in boating and water activities, go fishing, play golf or venture of to go hiking. The Summer is very popular for horseback riding, para-sailing, bike riding which is always fun, and last but not least their fantastic water slide. In the fall you are able to enjoy all of the Spring and Summer activities and also enjoy the transition of the trees and plants into beautiful frolic. Winter seems to be the busiest season because everyone loves the snow. It is time for the skiers, snowboarders, and those who just want to play in the snow. Big Bear Lake can be enjoyed by going on a short or long vacation.
The Lake is not a source of water for the local water supply. The only water taken locally is by the two ski resorts for making artificial snow and is managed by the Municipal Water District. Big bear is on leased land from the government and will never be sold because of its historical value. In 1912, the original 1884 lake was rebuilt. In the same area you will see Treasure Island, sometimes called China Island,( the correct name is Garstin Island). Treasure Island is privately owned and the home is built on top of the giant boulders is a series of wonderful Oriental style buildings that were built in 1911 by Maude Garstin.
The nearby boulders are a favorite with tourists and local youngsters for jumping and diving. The Lake is a favorite with boating enthusiasts, and during the summer season, tourists and locals take advantage of the picturesque surroundings to enjoy fishing, wake boarding, water skiing, jet skiing, para-sailing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming. In the winter months, the Lake sometimes freezes over, and although it is beautiful to look at, it is dangerous and the public is prohibited from playing on the ice.
