This is hardly a surprise but according to the Flower Expert, the rose is the most popular flower in the world. Many people like growing roses so that they can clip them and arrange them. With just a few varieties, it is easy to create a unique bouquet every time you harvest these sweet-smelling flowers. If you want to pick roses, do so carefully. You don’t want to damage your vines or bushes. It’s also important to harvest these showy flowers at just the right time of day.
Decide on when you’ll pick flowers. By cutting roses in the morning or evening, you limit the stress your plant will experience. If you cut flowers in the heat of the day, you could negatively affect your plant’s growth. Always cut roses after a good watering.
Before you make a trek into your rose garden, fill a pitcher or a bucket with cool water. When you pick a rose, place the rose in the water all the way up to the bloom. If you have many flowers to pick, this will prevent the blooms from wilting.
Slide on a pair of gardening gloves before you cut roses. Even if you have small hands and a neat garden, thorns can scratch you quite easily. It’s a good idea to review your garden and look for the flowers you want before you start snipping. Be selective and choose plump flowers with closed buds. If you clip an open rose, they won’t last very long in your home.
For the best results, cut roses with pruning shears. You should place the blades at a 45-degree angle near the stem. Make the cut smoothly just above the first pair of leaves. Immediately slide the flower into the pail of water you brought. Before you arrange the roses, trim the ends of the stems again under running water. That’s it!
