Kids love special days, especially activities that inspire and encourage fun. St. Patrick’s Day is one of those days. Also, St. Patrick’s Day is a perfect way to break up the dull days that come while waiting for Spring to arrive. Here are a few ideas to help set the tone for a kid-friendly St. Patrick’s Day party.
Prepare for green. Decorations do not have to be fancy, but the theme of green should be followed. Green chains made from construction paper can be hung in the main party room. Green crepe paper can also be hung. Shamrocks, rainbows, and pots of gold can set the scene for the party.
Pot o’ Gold Game
Hide little chocolate coins all around the house or, if weather permits, hide the coins outside. Have the kids search for the “gold.” Depending on the ages of the children, these coins can be hid in plain site or in more difficult places. Little bags can be handed out to put the treasures in or little black pots can be used.
Pin the Shamrock on the Leprechaun
Blindfold the children one by one and have them pin the shamrock on the leprechaun or on the leprechaun’s hat like the old fashion game pin the tail on the donkey. Children will find the game funny when they realize where they have stuck their shamrock.
Kids love to create. Stock up on green construction paper for shamrocks. For a 3D effect, glue dried split peas to the shamrocks or add green glitter to the shamrocks to give sparkle. Rainbows can also be created as a way to tie in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow theme. Pots of gold can be created with black construction paper then add cold sequins, mini gold pom-poms, or gold glitter.
St. Patrick’s Day Food
It’s amazing the types of food that can be created just by adding green food coloring. Dyeing food a shade a green will give the snacks a festive look. Or prepare food beforehand that is already a shade of green. For instance, there is green gelatin or green pudding which can be placed into little cups or little pots to go along with theme. Lime flavored drinks can be served with lime sherbet. The list is endless when creating green food. Just remember to stock up on green food coloring, prior to the party.
Play Irish music in the background during the party.
