Father’s Day is the day that we set aside each year to celebrate our dads. One thing that I always liked to do with my dad is to watch movies. My dad was a great critic of movies, which made it a challenge to recommend a movie that he liked. In honor of my dad, I would like to recommend the following movies to watch with your dad on Father’s Day.
Shawshank Redemption is possibly the best movie ever made. This story about a man sent to prison for life for a crime he did not commit has everything: drama, friendship, hope and justice. When Andy Dufresne finally breaks out of prison, it is redemption – when he and Red reunite at the end of the movie there will not be a dry eye in the room. The relationship between Red and Andy is what makes me recommend this as a great Father’s Day movie; their relationship is truly a father-son bond.
Forest Gump is a story of love, of human kindness and of never giving up. Forest is ‘not a smart man’ measured by many standards, but during the movie, you realize that he is actually very wise. The movie follows him through his life, his hardships and his triumphs. In each situation, you see Forest doing the right thing; what better message is there on Father’s Day?
Braveheart is a story of courage and sacrifice. William Wallace is determined to bring freedom to the Scots. Along the way, his bride is murdered and his friends betray him. In spite of all of this, he fights on. I recommend this movie for those of you whose father does not want his heartstrings tugged, he just wants to see some fighting and killing. Sometimes you have to sneak the heartstring tugs in under the radar; this one disguises the tugs pretty well under all the gore.
It’s a Wonderful Life
It’s a Wonderful Life is usually considered a Christmas Movie. I disagree with this designation. It’s a movie for all seasons. This is the story of a man who thinks his life has had no purpose and thinks everyone would have been better off without him. An angel intercedes and shows him what life would have been without him. This is a fantastic theme for Father’s Day, and a great way to tell your dad how important he has been in your life.
