All of us have had dry, irritated eyes at some point in time. Usually we don’t know the cause. All we know is they hurt and we’re miserable. They burn and itch. They are watery but dry at the same time. We feel like rubbing them but that just makes it worse. It’s enough to ruin your day!
Why Are They Dry?
There are so many causes of dry eyes that it’s best to have your eye Doctor examine you to make sure there is nothing serious going on. Most of the time there is nothing to worry about and home remedies will work quickly to get rid of the irritation. If you wear contact lenses, you should remove them as soon as you notice any sign of irritation in your eyes. Leaving them in can cause further problems and sometimes it can even damage your eyes. The main causes of dry eyes are:
Dry air in the room for a prolonged period of time
Reaction to a medication
Best Way to Relieve Dry Eyes
Anytime I have any type of ailment, I look for a natural home remedy as my first option. I would rather take care of it at home than have to call for an appointment, drive to an office somewhere and wait to be examined and treated. Some home remedies work for some people and others work for other people. You just have to try a few until you find the one that is right for you. My favorite home remedies for dry eyes are:
Take supplements that contain Omega 3 such as fish oil or flax seed oil
Hold a warm compress over your eyes in five minute intervals
Get a humidifier
Take a break from TV or the computer and blink a lot for a few minutes
The not-so-natural remedy I use when all else fails is OTC eye drops. These can be used up to four times a day if needed.
When it’s Finally Over
When your eyes are finally back to normal, be careful. Overuse of your contacts can cause the same symptoms to come right back again. Keep the humidifier turned on to the low setting to prevent the air in the room from drying out all the way. Pay attention to how your eyes feel after you take your medicine so you can determine if that may be the cause of your dry eyes. Make sure to eat right and get enough vitamins each day through food or supplements.
We Need Them
Vision is one of the most important senses we have. Imagine never again seeing a sunset or a rainbow. What if you couldn’t see your daughter or granddaughter smile at you again? We all need to protect our eyes at all times so that we’ll be able to enjoy all of the wonders of the world for many years to come.
