I recently had to do a cosmetic haul because everything in my collection is drying and flaking and clumping these days. I haven’t been happy with my Wet N’ Wild stick eyeliner lately; after lots of pressure and tugging my allegedly black stick will turn out steel gray. No bueno. So, I headed over to Ulta, picked out the ones with 100 reviews or more, and then picked out the cruelty-free companies.
1. Nyx Cosmetics Retractable Eyeliner – $4.49
Rating: 4.3 (based on 345 reviews; 92% recommend)
This is a retractable eyeliner pencil that 298 of the 345 reviews agreed was easy to apply and glides on smoothly. More than that, it comes in 18 different colors, so if you’re looking for neutral or funky, they have you covered.
2. Essence Long-Lasting Eyeliner Pencil – $2.49
Rating: 4.3 (based on 306 reviews; 94% recommend)
This is another pencil known to be easy to apply and that glides on smooth. It only comes in 8 colors, but at $2.49, no one’s complaining. They have all the colors necessary to make your eyes pop. If you have blue eyes, go for the dark brown Hot Chocolate or the deeper blue Cool Down. If you have green eyes, go for the Hot Chocolate or the purple Berry Merry. If you have hazel eyes, the Hot Chocolate, Berry Merry to bring out the green, or the Cool Down to bring out any hints of blue. If you have brown eyes, lucky you. You can pull off pretty much anything, but definitely try the green I Have a Green to open them up.
3. Rimmel London Exaggerate Full Colour Eye Definer – $5.99
Rating: 4.4 (based on 130 reviews; 93% recommend)
This automatic pencil by Rimmel doesn’t need sharpening and almost 90% of reviews say it’s easy to apply. It comes in six different colors, again to make any eye color pop.
4. Prestige Cosmetics Automatic Waterproof Eyeliner – $5.49
Rating: 4.3 (based on 123 reviews; 90% recommend)
This stick comes in eight colors and the most common complaint, fading throughout the day, was only reported by about 15% of reviewers. Most agree it glides on smoothly.
5. L’Oreal Linear Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner – $8.99
Rating: 4.3 (based on 166 reviews; 89% recommend)
Finally a liquid eyeliner makes it onto the list. Most reviewers say this is easy to apply. It comes in two different colors- black and brown.
6. Prestige Cosmetics Liquid Eyeliner – $5.99
Rating: 4.3 (based on 207 reviews; 88% recommend)
Prestige is back on the list, this time with their liquid eyeliner. For a liquid eyeliner, I find it very impressive that it comes in seven different colors and shades including white. (Seriously, I never can find white liquid eyeliner anywhere.)
7. Essence Gel Liner – $3.99
Rating: 4.4 (based on 240 reviews; 92% recommend)
And Essence is back with the first gel liner on the list. At $3.99, this might be the cheapest gel liner on the market, but it still has great reviews. It only comes in one color- the classic black.
8. L’Oreal Lineur Intense – $8.99
Rating: 4.3 (based on 165 reviews; 86% recommend)
I’m not sure if this differs at all from #5 at all other than the applicator. Still, it has basically the same rating and comes in the same colors: black and brown.
9. Nyx Cosmetics Collection Noir Liquid Black Eyeliner – $5.99
Rating: 4.4 (based on 138 reviews; 93% recommend)
Nyx comes back with the liquid eyeliner. Only 11% of reviewers report bad things about it, the most common that it smudges or runs.
10. Prestige Cosmetics Total Intensity Eyeliner – $5.99
Rating: 4.1 (based on 154 reviews; 84% recommend)
The only one to make it three times on the list: Prestige. This classic pencil comes in eight different colors and 80% of reviewers think it glides on smoothly, while more than 75% of them think the color is bold.
