When I need to know what’s going on in Chico, I turn to my buddy, Dallas, at Chico Life 530. His website is jam packed with the rundown of Chico. From festivals, to outdoor activities, to family-fun and food, this place has the 4-1-1 on it all. So when I asked him to direct me to the best barbecue in town, this is what I got. I’m about 30-minutes south of Chico and here are two of Dallas’ favorites and one hometown favorite of mine that’s just a short drive outside of Chico.
Smokin’ Mo’s Barbecue
The owners of Smokin’ Mo’s Barbecue were inspired to open their joint after a cross-country journey that included stops at 80 different restaurants. They have three locations in California and serve up messy smoked meat slathered in sauces of all kinds. The ode to New Orleans is the Louisiana Hot Link that is grilled with onions and peppers and served on a French roll. Side dishes include garlic fries and corn bread that taste like they are delivered fresh from the South. You can miss this establishment with the smoke billowing from the streets. Open fire cooking and fresh off the grill treats await you.

A & L BBQ
This little diner is located in Princeton, which is about 30-minutes south of Chico on Highway 45-this is my personal barbecue spot. The town is populated with less than 300 people and this joint is about to put the town on the map. Andy and Leslie Ferrindelli are local residents of Princeton who took their passion for smoking ribs and turned it into a business. The restaurant features diner favorites like burgers and breakfast during the day and stays open late on Friday nights to serve home-style barbecue dinners like nothing else. The most popular dinners include their award-winning ribs that come with all the fixings and unique restaurant fare like lamb shanks. Prepare to leave full. All dinners are served with veggies, beans, salad and bread. It is trip back into time when you step into this place-it’s a neighborhood joint full of people, stories and friendships.

Hula’s Chinese Barbecue
A little bit different from the traditional idea of barbecue is Hula’s Chinese Barbecue. They have two locations in Chico that are both consistent favorites. This Asian inspired hot-spot lets you decide the menu. Combine a mix of meats and veggies and watch as it’s grilled to your liking on a huge grilling surface. Locals love Hula’s for the unique flavor and the healthy options for eating out. Mix grilled chicken and broccoli with a spicy sauce for a hearty meal that’s healthy too.
