Many preppers store food for long term. This may include freeze dried foods, military grade MREs, crackers, or dehydrated food. Although this is a great idea, anyone who has actually purchased these items know how expensive they are. A single MRE can cost around $5. There are many different solutions around the money issue when it comes to food, and here are some of those solutions.
Many long term storage food items are available at your local grocery store. For example you can buy 20 pounds of rice for around 5 to 10 dollars. Although you need about 2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice to make it, rice is an outstanding prepper food as it it served hot and has tons of calories. Rice also has so many different uses, you can grind it to a flour or make sake with it. Keep this great food in mind next time you go to the grocery store. A good way to measure the value is by comparing to an MRE. With 20 pounds of rice you can feed a family of 3-5 for about a week for 10 dollars in comparison to one person for a day with 10 dollars worth of MREs.
The next food is beans. Beans and rice are pretty much the prepper super foods. Beans are also extremely cheap. You can get huge cans of them for a few dollars and they will last a very long time. Best of all, beans and rice can be turned into many different dishes. Soup, chicken entrees, beef entrees etc. Beans make for an outstanding soup by them selves if you know how to make it. Each can that costs a few dollars can feed a family of 3-5 for a day and only costs around 3 dollars.
The next food is cereal. You can get a huge bag of cereal for around a dollar if you look in the right places for store brand. One of these giant bags of store brand cereal will run 99 cents and will make about 20 bowls of cereal. This is astonishing and will boost morale and provide for a tasty, portable snack on marches.
If you invest your money wisely on foods like these you can have more than a years supply of food for about 10% or less of the cost it would be to buy freeze dried and dehydrated foods, plus it will be a lot more tasty.
