Quarter-inch to half-inch elastic
Large embellishment, such as a silk flower, or cloth badge
Needle, thread, scissors
There are lots of options for covering a baby’s feet. You can put booties on her, opt for socks only, or even buy some of those tiny, little shoes. Of course, the baby doesn’t need shoes yet, and it might be too hot for socks or booties. The perfect foot cover for baby is a pair of barefoot sandals. The shoes are quick to make and look great with onesies, short sets, dresses, and other outfits.
In the summer, it’s a bit warm for baby’s feet to be completely covered. That’s why barefoot sandals are the perfect fashion accessory for a little girl – or a boy. With a needle and thread, and a few stitches, you can make an adorable pair of bottomless sandals for your baby.
You’ll need a length of elastic, and a decorative accent, to make each shoe. Use quarter-inch to half-inch elastic; it will constitute the “shoes”. First, wrap the elastic around the ankle of your baby, and cut it to be that size. Bring the ends together, cross one over the other, and stitch them together. That will be the ankle strap for the shoes.
Make the foot strap by cutting another piece of elastic. Wrap elastic from the top of the foot, to the sole of the foot, and back up to the top of the foot. Cut that piece of elastic, make the ends flush with each other, and stitch them together.
A large accent is needed to cover the elastic ends on each barefoot sandal. Some good choices for a girl’s shoes include pompoms, plastic or silk flowers, and even a rolled piece of cloth. For a boy, a badge-type piece, or a cloth flag, is great. It can be helpful to put the elastic straps on the baby’s foot to decide on placement for the accent. Mark where it needs to go in order to cover all four of the elastic ends. Remove the sandal and then stitch on the flower or other embellishment.
Make barefoot sandals in many styles and your baby – boy or girl – will have cute footwear instead of ordinary socks or booties. At a craft store, you’ll find all sorts of sweet embellishments simply by browsing. Or, if you’re good with knitting and crocheting, make flowers or other yarn items to use as shoe accents. Your baby will be so stylish! Don’t be surprised, though, when all of your friends’ babies suddenly have footless shoes, too!
