The bright colors of a watermelon serve as culinary inspiration for a delicious cake for a party or any warm weather event. You could contact a bakerym but why not save some money and do it yourself? Decorate any round cake to look like a watermelon cake. Bake two single layer cakes or make mini cakes with cupcakes. If you bake and prepare your cake well in advance of the party, you’ll give the frosting plenty of time to stiffen and set.
Baking Tips for a Watermelon Cake
It’s not just the frosting that makes this watermelon cake so tempting but the batter as well. Prepare a watermelon cake by tweaking a white or yellow cake batter mix. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the mix as you prepare it. However, don’t go overboard. Eating bright red cake can be off-putting to some and it could stain teeth and clothing. If you intend to serve cupcakes, select red cupcake wrappers.
Watermelon Cake Decorations
Scoop one can of plain white frosting into one bowl and the second container in another bowl. One bowl will be green frosting the other will become red. In one bowl of frosting, add four to five drops of food coloring. With a large metal spoon, mix the color into the frosting. If you need a deeper color, add one more drop and continue to mix.
In the second bowl, add four to five drops of green food coloring. Use a different spoon to mix the green frosting. Add more drops if you need a darker color.
Position the first layer of cake on a cake plate. Cover the top of the cake with red frosting but don’t frost the sides. Now place the second cake on top. Carefully wrap the outside edge of the cake foil strips. By foiling the cake, you will stop the different colored icings from bleeding into one another. Frost the top with red and refrigerate the cake for one hour. Remove the foil and frost the sides of the cake with green frosting. I like using a rubber spatula to get a smooth edge. Decorate the red portion of the cake with chocolate chips. (They look like seeds!) Refrigerate the cake for at least an hour to set the frosting.
