For those of us who have been through it before or who are going through it now, planning for college is stressful and daunting. MTV’s Awkward is great at capturing the truth about high school while highlighting the funniest aspects of life at the same time.
In this episode, Jenna and Tamara are on a weekend overnight visit to a college they both want to get into. Jenna’s parents are along for the trip, staying in a hotel while the girls are assigned hosts to stay with on campus. Upon arrival, Tamara proclaims that college is “like a Pinterest board full of bangable dudes.” But in true Tamara fashion she immediately tries to refocus herself on the goal at hand, getting into college and acing their interviews the next day. She starts quizzing Jenna on her potential responses to interview questions, to which Jenna responds with a very well-planned out response. Tamara tells her it’s a yawn and starts to rattle off her response complete with acronym using the letters of her name.
Then the best looking boy they had ever seen walks towards them. Both girls stand dumbstruck as the boy bypasses them and approaches Jenna’s mom Lacy and invited her to a party that night. When he sees Tamara and Jenna staring at him like complete goofballs (trying to be cute of course), he tells them sorry and it’s invite only. On the tour of the campus, the (cute) guide Luke asks if there are any writers in the group. When Jenna’s mom singles her out but Jenna freezes, unable to respond to the question of who is her favorite author. The guide graciously says most writers are silent type and continues on with the tour.
Back in Palos Verdes, Val called Matty into her office. At first she seems insightful talking about his recent behavioral changes, but then in true Val form flounders in her conclusion. She thinks Matty is gay and afraid to come out of the closet. In spite of Matty’s best efforts, she does not believe when he says he isn’t gay.
As the tour concludes, Jenna decides to give it one last shot at talking to Luke about her favorite authors. She lists William Faulkner, Joan Didion, and says she is not ashamed to say she has read everything by V.C. Andrews. The two bond instantly over her “high-low” blend of book tastes and Luke invites her to a fundraiser for the literacy center that night. Meanwhile Tamara is bonding with her hostess for the night, a sorority president whose plucky attitude is so much like Tamara’s it is sickening. She invites the girls to a big party that night and Tamara strong arms Jenna into attending with her and skipping the fundraiser.
In Palos Verdes, Sadie is skipping cheerleading practice because Lissa apparently makes sickening faces when calling out cheers, plus she is depressed because Austin is away at a robotics competition so she “can’t even bone her sorrows away.” Jake is bummed out because “Autumn” (aka Tamara’s catfishing alter ego) isn’t responding to his texts. Matty decides enough is enough and invites them over while his mom is out of town. Eva invites herself offering booze and much to Sadie’s shagrin, Matty invites her to come.
Tamara and Jenna arrive at the party. Jenny expects to be drinking wine and to meet smart guys in blazers but instead is seized on her way in and is made into “Edward Forty Hands.” Jenna mopes around the party disappointed that her dreams of collegiate sophistication were destroyed. Tamara on the other hand is literally drinking the kool-aid (which in this case is actually off-brand vodka), she is in sorori-heaven. Jenna tells her she’s leaving to go to the literacy fundraiser and as she leaves has a sudden realization that even if they go to the same college, this might be the end of Jenara.
Back to the house party at Matty’s, the gang is playing quarters and doing shots, though Jake for his part is still obsessing about Autumn. When the game winds down, Eva has just finished telling a story that Sadie calls a “retold episode of Gossip Girl.” Eva is condescending as usual, telling Sadie that that show is tame but pretty true to life for “us New Yorkers” and then draping herself on Matty calling him a “wild man.” Then comes a reference to Matty being “McKitten”. Who know what that’s about?
Eva spies the hot tub and decides they should all get in. Sadie says she would but doesn’t have a suit, to which Eva replies “who needs one?” and begins to strip off her clothes. In true catfight fashion, she goads Sadie saying “Sadie, I totally understand if you don’t feel comfortable.”
Now for once, I think we are all on team Sadie, especially when she strips off her clothes in a heartbeat. Eva then ups the ante by going topless again goading Sadie, “Sadie I really admire how comfortable you are with your body. You’re so brave.” Sadie’s response is fantastic. “I’m not brave,” she says, “I have amazing tits. Unlike you and your sad floppers.” The boys rush to follow the girls into the hot tub.
Jenna gets to the fundraiser, and Luke is excited to see her. The two begin to banter until Luke has to go and give a speech for the literacy center. Jenna decides college boys are not varsity high school boys, but a whole different ball game. Meanwhile Tamara is partying it up and getting wasted in spite of the tally system of marking your arm for every drink. Tamara also runs into Jenna’s mom at the party. Jenna meanwhile leaves the fundraiser with Luke.
Matty is wasted back at home and in spite of her best efforts, Sadie stops Eva from putting him to bed. Sadie takes him upstairs and gets him in bed with a glass of water. When she is getting the water, Matty tries to text Jenna. At the same time Jake texts both “Autumn” and Tamara, and Tamara takes this as a sign to drink more. Back in Matty’s room he and Sadie are talking and Matty reveals that he finds Sadie nice and so pretty. Matty kisses Sadie and the two are both disgusted. “It’s like kissing my sister, which for all I know you could be.” And then Matty reveals his adoption secret to Sadie, finally opening up, the two fall asleep holding each other in comfort.
Jenna wakes up to coffee and crosswords with Luke then rushes out the door to get to her interview. Luke asks Jenna if he can see her later that week in Palos Verdes. Tamara and Mrs. Hamilton wake up still at the party and hung over. Tamara bombs her interview, puking in a mug of pens on the desk. Jenna nails it and is excited to go to college. She deletes the text message from Matty and smiles at the one she receives from Luke. In Palos Verdes, Eva snaps a picture of Matty and Sadie asleep and half naked in bed. What is going on there? And what is going to happen with Luke and Jenna? We will see next week, Tuesday May 20th, 2014 on MTV.
