As per usual awkwardness takes center stage on MTV’s Awkward. Matty and Jenna gave into their attraction at the end of last week’s season premiere, giving us all hope for a Jenna-Matty reunion special. This week however, we open on a lighter note. Jakes music video shoot to be exact. Bikini clad girls, Tamara dancing like a fool with a beach ball, and Jenna getting chastised for looking into the camera…grimacing into the camera is more like it.
During a break, Tamara reveals just how much she hates Jake’s music and Jenna reveals to Tamara that she and Matty had sex but that they haven’t talked since. Just as she is about to go talk to Matty she gets a smack in the face. Literally. By the top of a bottle that Jake accidentally sends flying her way. Jenna’s tooth is chipped and she is bleeding. Matty comes to her rescue and sets out to find a first aid kit for those “tampon things” that you stick up your nose to stop bleeding. As Jenna notes she always imagined Matty coming to her rescue, but nowhere in that fantasy was he “shoving feminine products up her nose.”
Matty doesn’t find the first aid kit, but in the garage finds something that upsets him. When he returns to Jenna he is distracted and distant. Jenna is of course confused. At school the next day, Jenna seeks out Ms. Marks to help her with her extracurriculars and signs up to be a peer counselor but has to get her tooth fixed first. Matty continues to act distant and tells Ms. Marks that he wants to go to college anywhere that is far away from there.
Jenna’s dentist trip turns into a nightmare when she comes out of anesthesia to find out her mom had the dentist remove Jenna’s wisdom teeth too, just to get it all done at once. Jenna is not to open her mouth for 24 hours. In spite of this Jenna goes to school the next day, if only to escape her mother. She texts Matty but receives no reply for much of the day. When she does hear back he only says “k” which the new girl Eva tells Jenna is an insult. Jenna wants to talk but Matty continuously blows her off. On the plus side, Jenna’s peer counseling goes amazingly, due in large part to the fact that she says absolutely nothing.
Meanwhile, Tamara has finally listened to Jake’s newest song and loves it. She finally supports Jake’s music and is thrilled that Jakara is back strong. Sadly Jake doesn’t feel the same. When Tamara tells him what she thinks about his song, he says he wants to break up and that they are going in different directions. Tamara takes it badly and when he says “At least you don’t have to pretend to like my music anymore,” Tamara replies, “That’s not the only thing I won’t have to pretend to like” referring of course to her infamous lack of satisfaction in the bedroom.
Finally Jenna can talk again the next day. She confronts Matty saying she refuses to be his dirty little secret and he can’t keep avoiding her. He is flabbergasted and blurts out that he found out that he was adopted. He found the papers in the garage when he was trying to find the first aid kit and that it wasn’t about Jenna at all.
Meanwhile, throughout the episode Lissa and Sadie are at odds. Sadie is still angry at Lissa for accepting the position as cheer captain. When Sadie says she has to leave early and refuses to give a reason Lissa exclaims that she is “ultimating” her (yep, she is as smart as ever) and kicks her off the squad for leaving. As the episode continues on, the two act like a freshly broken up couple. Each pretending to move on with other women, laughing as if the person they are with said something funny, and worrying about how the other has moved on so fast. The pinnacle moment comes when Sadie emerges from the utility closet with Jenna (high on her pain medication) who is petting Sadie’s bun. “Lissa. Don’t go! It’s not what it looks like!” And finally at cheer practice, Sadie tears across the field in the bratwurst food truck she works in, in her beer wench uniform and proclaims herself to Lissa. So dramatic and even more hilarious.
Tune in next week to see how Jenna and Matty DTR and how Jake and Tamara handle the end of the reign of Jakara. April 29th, 2014 on MTV.
