Need a quick answer to a career or personal dilemma? Career and life coach Marielys Camacho-Reyes will answer your concerns in her column “Ask the Coach.”
When I was hired for my current position, my boss never told me that, as part of my job, I had to conduct presentations. I love my job, but I do not like to give presentations because I feel uncomfortable speaking in front of people. When my boss suggested that I started working on my presentations, I mentioned my concerns to him, but he said that if I was unable to do the presentations, then he needed to find someone else to do my job. Again; I love my job but I do not think I should be expected to do these presentations, especially when there is nothing in my job description that says that I have to do them. I really do not want to lose my job, but I strongly believe that my boss is acting a little unfair by asking me to do something that he knows it will make me very uncomfortable. Help please!
The Shy Employee
Dear Shy Employee,
I see where is that you are coming from, but I also see where is that your boss is coming from. Unfortunately, you need to understand that if he wants you do take some new responsibilities, you may have to do your best to comply with them because, at the end, he may decide that you are not the right person for the position and this little issue could bring you a lot of discomfort at the office. I understand that being shy make things a little complicated for you and that you may feel that because of this, you cannot do these presentations. My question for you is; have you tried conducting the presentations to see how things go? If you have not tried, I will suggest that before you continue torturing yourself, you go ahead and try at least once and see how things go. Who knows; maybe after conducting one presentation, you realize that you like doing them. Go ahead; give it a try and see how it goes. If after trying, you realize that conducting presentations is something that you do not want to do, then I guess it will be time for you to do what you think is right for you, and if finding a job that does not require you to conduct presentations is something that you may want to do, then, go ahead and change jobs.
