I recently got promoted to a management position. This new position comes with a lot of responsibilities. One of them is to manage a group of five investigators and a secretary. Some of the people in this group of very good friends of mine and it just feels weird that now, I am their boss. They are very cool with that, but I feel super bad about the situation. This is my first time supervising people, and I am afraid that people will think that I am not capable for the job. I already talked to my direct supervisor and she thinks I am just nervous. I do feel nervous but I also feel like this promotion came too fast, too soon and that I am not ready for it.
The New Manager
Dear New Manager,
What you are feeling right now is fear of the unknown, my dear. And that is completely normal. This is your first time working as a manager and it is understandable that you have your doubts about your capabilities. What you need to do is not to allow those doubts to take control of the situation. If you were given the promotion is because your superiors think that you can do it. If they believe in you, why you cannot believe in yourself as well? Stop worrying and enjoy the opportunity that was given to you. If you think you need help performing well in your new position, you can ask your supervisor to allow you to take some managerial trainings to help you polish your abilities. Doing that will give you the opportunity to learn new skills and to further develop the ones that you already have. The important part here is not to allow fear to keep you from moving forward in this new challenge in your professional life. You got it because you deserved it. Keep telling that to yourself until you believe it. Remember; you got that far because you worked hard to get there, so enjoy it!
