I was recently contacted by a modeling agency telling me that they wanted to fly me to New York for a photo shoot for a magazine. This is a dream come true for me since I always wanted to be a model. The problem that I have is that my parents think that going there by myself is dangerous and they said that unless the agency pays for one of them to go with me to New York, that I won’t be going. I feel bad about all this because I really want to do this photo shoot, but I do not know if it will be polite for me to ask the agency to pay for one of my parents to go with me. Do you think that if I ask the agency to pay for my parents’ trip, they will see that as me trying to take advantage of them?
The Soon to be Model
Dear Soon to be Model,
I have to say that, I kind of agree with your parents. Going to New York by yourself, especially if you are a minor, is not only dangerous, but also a little crazy. You have no idea if the people who want to fly you there are for real, or if they are just bad people posing as a modeling agency just to take advantage of you. I would suggest you that, before you make any commitments with them, to do some research about this company and see what you can find. If after doing a research, you see that everything seems legit, then I will say, go ahead and talk to them about your parents’ requirements. You do not mention in your email how old you are, but I am assuming that you are a minor when you parents are so involved in this. If you are, in fact a minor, then it is the agency’s responsibility to make sure your parents are present during the entire process, so go ahead, talk to them about this, and see what they have to say. The thrust is that, then allowing you to bring one of your parents with you (even if they do not pay for it) it is not just a nice thing to do; it is also the law.
