My mom is 66 years old and has decided that she wants to start living with this guy she met at a Bingo tournament. This guy is like 80 years old. They have been seeing each other for a month now, and she feels like they are soulmates and that is why she wants to bring him into her house. I understand that it is her life and her house, but I think that she is going way overboard with this situation. I told her that if she wants to see this guy, to go ahead and do it, but not to bring him into her house. I do not like this idea at all because my children visit her house on a daily basis and I do not feel comfortable having this stranger near my children. I seriously do not like this guy. I honestly cannot stand him and I think my mom is just going through mid-life crisis. Am I being too controlling with my mom’s issues? Do I have a point by not wanting my children to be around this man?
The Concerned Daughter
Dear Concerned Daughter,
I am happy for your mom. It seems like she found the person whom she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about this and if she wants to bring this person to live with her, she can do that because, the truth is that it is her house; not yours. I understand that you do not agree with this relationship, especially because it will interfere with your children’s ability to visit her. Well, in that particular case, you have the right to do whatever you think is best for your children. If allowing your kids to go to her house brings concern to you, I guess you can change the way you do things and ask her to come to your house to visit them instead. That, my friend, would be a great way to help you kids maintain the relationship they have with their grandmother without interfering with your mom’s new relationship. She has the right to be happy and if this person is bringing happiness into her life, I think you should just stay out of it and let her enjoy it while it last.
