Terro Ant Traps are something I have used for years inside my house. Instead of just killing the ants on the spot, they take the poison back to their homes and kill them all! These can be found at a local hardware store or at your local supermarket. The little traps can be placed in high traffic areas, but should be kept away from food sources and out of reach of children. Terro also makes a spray to kill carpenter ants and termites.
While movies with characters like Flick make ants look cool and cute, they can be devastating if they are allowed to live as uninvited guests in your house or garage. Here are a few simple products I have found over the years that help combat these little critters and their friends.
Do It Best has a great ant killer that I have used for years. I spray it around the outside of my house to keep the ants from coming in. It also works on carpenter ants, spiders, cockroaches, water bugs, carpet beetles and silverfish. It kills them on contact and last for up to 4 weeks. This is very effective on sugar ants, which is what I deal with a lot. This product also helps keep spiders out of my house.
If you do not want to use harsh chemicals or need to find something you can use in a kitchen buy hot cayenne pepper, the hotter the better. I am not for sure why it works but we used it in the nursing home kitchen I worked at since we could not use spray because it had the potential of contaminating the food.
Vinegar and baby powder have been know to repel ants as well but I have not used this method before.
Raid’s Ant Killer 17 has no odor so is great for indoors. It kills the bugs on contact. It is useful on ants, multi-colored Asian Lady Beetles, crickets, roaches, spiders and silverfish. This is an indoor use only.
When selecting an ant killer be sure to read the label since some are for use inside or outside only. Be sure to wash your hands after handling any of these products. Wearing gloves and other protective gear are a good idea since you are coming in contact with chemicals.
By keeping sugary items like candy and other sweets in an air-tight container you can prevent these little critters from coming into your home. Do not leave your sugar for baking in the bag with just a chip clip to keep it closed because ants can find their way inside. If you have a huge ant problem that will not go away and there is an infestation, especially carpenter ants, you may need to call an exterminator.
