Dead Space is an action packed game that has controls and depth truly ahead of its time. The graphics quality is decent with a very interesting lighting scheme and detailed textures. The storyline really draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It begins as you approach a mining ship with your crew with the objective of repairing unknown issues. As you enter the dark and damaged vessel you quickly get a feeling that something is really wrong. As catastrophe comes on fast and strong you become isolated from the other two crew members and have to survive as you make your way through various levels of this ship. Repairs need to be made in order to try to evacuate this ship, which involves a lot of strategy and puzzle skills. You control the main character, Isaac Clarke, and follow behind him with health level indicated up the spine of his suit and holographic displays on the guns with ammo readouts. A holographic display is also available from the suit that lets you access items that you are carrying.
The game is set up with save stations along the way after critical checkpoints. Also there are stores to purchase more ammo, health packs, and suit upgrades. The bench is a station where you can use collected “power nodes” to add upgrades to weapons on the four categories; damage, capacity, reload, and alternate fire. A unique alternate firing option is available for each weapon that opens up new combat tactics.
There are many interesting weapons available as you progress through. Schematics for new weapons are found throughout the maps and can be collected and the purchased at the stores. The first gun you acquire is the plasma cutter; very powerful yet slow firing and low capacity. The other weapons available are a pulse rifle, buzz saw, flame thrower, contact beam, and line gun.
This game was made in October of 2008 by EA Redwood which is now Visceral Games. The sequel was released in January 2011 and the 3rd followed in February of 2013. The Second continues on the story from where it leaves off at a cliff hanger ending. More on Dead Space 2 can be found at my contributor page here.
