At two pivotal points in my life I suddenly gained a massive amount of weight for no apparent reason. Though I was never diagnosed by a doctor, I truly believe my thyroid was at the root of the problem. In both instances, my self-treatment was the same, and in both instances, it was effective.
If this is the case, I personally suffered from a thyroid condition twice in my life. I feel this is significant, in that it shows that this is indeed a “disease” and can reoccur if the thyroid is not kept in check.
Symptoms of Thyroid Disease
Though not under doctor care, the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction were obvious to me. In my case, it was Hypothyroidism. The two most prominent effects of this particular dysfunction (for me) being:
1. Sudden uncontrollable weight gain.
2. Constant fatigue.
However, other symptoms of Hypothyroidism can include constipation, depression, pain in the thyroid gland, and cold sensitivity.
Thyroid dysfunction can accompany other ailments
My second encounter with thyroid disease came in conjunction with another condition, namely, menopausal symptoms. This made the control of both far more complex, but I feel that in the end, the use of Kelp may have helped with regard to several of the menopausal symptoms as well. I had already tried many natural remedies for menopause, but to little avail. They helped with one or two symptoms, such as hot flashes and hives, but did nothing for what I felt were the most serious underlying problems.
The menopausal condition made fatigue and weight gain far worse in this instance, and kelp became instrumental in relieving this. Though I have found no real evidence, other than my own experience to back this up, I do feel it aided in controlling the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome I experienced at the time as well. I related this condition to menopausal symptoms, but it could also stem from the thyroid dysfunction itself. Certainly, not everyone suffering from Restless Leg Syndrome is going through Menopause.
What is Kelp, and why does it help?
Kelp is a seaweed, and it is rich in iodine. Iodine deficiency is a known factor in regulating thyroid function. After beginning a regimen of kelp, taken as a daily supplement, I found that my energy levels increased almost immediately. Within 6 months, I had also lost nearly 100 pounds, with little change to my basic diet.
The results and findings in this article are gleaned entirely from my own personal experience. There are many health issues that can stem from Thyroid Disease. This article is in no way intended to replace treatment from your doctor, but I do suggest you consult your medical professional about the possibility of utilizing kelp, should you feel thyroid dysfunction has a bearing on your health in any way. It is my belief that further research into the connection between all the aforementioned afflictions and their relative symptoms and potential cures is in order.
