There have been a number of different Spider-Man characters over the years, including one that was of Latino descent. As a matter of fact, “Amazing Spider-Man” actor Andrew Garfield said that he would love to pass the torch to an African-American or Latino actor and have Miles Morales become the next Spider-Man instead of just having Sony recast someone to play Peter Parker. However, according to a recent interview with “Amazing Spider-Man” producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, that will never happen. Arad said that there will be no other Spider-Man in this world outside of Peter Parker.
Arad said in the interview that, when Marvel tried to replace Peter Parker, it did not go well, so they won’t even attempt it in their Spider-Man world. With that said, here are three possibilities for alternative Spider-Man characters if they did attempt to switch things up.
Of course, the biggest name here is Miles Morales. In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, many things changed from how they are in the regular Marvel world. Many Marvel movie fans already know a lot about the Ultimate universe because the Avengers movies borrowed heavily from this world, with Nick Fury being a perfect example. In that world, Peter Parker was Spider-Man, but he died when he took a bullet to save Captain America and then, as he died, defeated the Green Goblin to save his friends and family.
After that, OsCorp used Peter Parker’s blood to create the formula that gave him his powers. A criminal steals the formula, but one of the spiders it was tested on crawls into his bag. While he is at the home of his grade school aged nephew Miles, the spider crawls out and bites Miles, giving him a version of Spider-Man’s powers. Not only does the story give the world an African-American/Latino Spider-Man, but it also puts the costume on a child, giving the idea a whole new dynamic.
The example that Arad mentioned when he said Marvel almost ruined everything when they tried to change Spider-Man characters was the Clone Saga. In what remains one of the most hated and despised story arcs in comic book history, The Jackal created a perfect clone of Peter Parker, including all Parker’s memories imprinted in him. This clone, Ben Reilly, believed he really was Spider-Man. At the end, medical tests revealed that Peter was the clone and Ben Reilly was the real Spider-Man all along and he took over the mantle of Spider-Man.
Fan backlash occurred and soon Peter was brought back. This doesn’t rule out a Ben Reilly appearance, as he is now the Scarlet Spider, a possibility for a spin-off hero.
The most recent change to the character came when Peter Parker and Doctor Octopus swapped bodies and then Peter died in the body of a cancer riddled Doctor Octopus. This made Octopus the new Spider-Man, although he still used Peter Parker’s body. However, he changed his moniker to the Superior Spider-Man and used his cunning and superior intelligence to make Spider-Man a more powerful superhero. Luckily, Peter’s conscious was still hidden deep in his body and kept the morals of the character intact.
