There is this new Pay-and-Wave transaction system for purchasing products and services in Australia.
I have been using it in my nearby suburbs and I tell you what, it is a mixed bag of tricks.
Pay-and-Wave is anything but formal and conservative compared to pin numbers and signatures and is in fact no-holds-barred (quite free really).
There is no pin number or signature required, just a ‘wave’ (like waving at anybody and everybody and most other unidentified people for the sake of it). You could also call a wave a ‘flash’ (like a Flash Dance or a flasher, especially a Pay-and-Wave flasher), or a ‘swipe’ (like taking a physical or verbal swipe at someone, which one should not).
This supposedly easy process is nothing but easy; it is actually very, very difficult. Now before all you Pay-and-Wavers out there start laughing, I know what you are saying…difficult, ha.
Think about it, because I know one does not think too much when using Pay-and-Wave, at least with the pin number or signature there is a barrier there to prolong you departing with your beloved money and deprive you of doing a pre-Pay-and-Wave flash-dance a little while longer. With the Pay-and-Wave you are thrown into the heart of the trouble, which is departing with your beloved money, pretty much straight away.
The ‘wave’ part of Pay-and-Wave is easy, yes, fun, that is a yes to, for this sophisticated payment system – ‘Pay-and-Wave, sophisticated, it is easy silly.’ Yes, and being easy you begin to relax and let the happy waving muscles go wild – ‘wave, wave, wave, and oh why not another wave’, and hey this Pay-and-Wave thing is fun after all. Fun hey, really, check your bank balance buddy and you better buckle up over that effort, and all your other Pay-and-Wave efforts, and from all the blooming bs in the sentence. The difficulty is holding back from waving; so forget the line, ‘don’t hold back’ as that has just been thrown out the window.
Before you know it, you have another addiction to add to your already long list of unruly habits. You become a gambling-type security risk because you, have to, do your Pay-and-Wave, at any store you can get your bank card on, as well as waving unnecessarily to unsuspecting people, doing ad-hoc flash-dances and taking swipes verbally and physically at just about anyone.
Then you start to think, ‘This Pay-and-Wave is not that bad after all’ (what the, I don’t think so).
