Do children who are physically active and are healthy because of their fitness level have more than just physical advantages over other children? According to an article written by Christopher Bergland, for psychologytoday.com the answer is yes. In Bergland’s article a study is quoted in which children who were in shape were determined to have better skills in terms of reading, and reading comprehension when compared to kids who are inactive and unfit. This can be directly correlated to children’s academic performance and may explain why some children may be struggling academically.
So what are some ways that you can get your child to become more active and physically fit. There are many options depending on what your day looks like. Many children naturally like to play outside and run around and thus develop physical fitness on their own. There are also children that would rather sit in front of the television or computer and play video games for hours. If your child is one who would rather sit in front of a television or computer then you might want to consider having them earn his or her computer, television, and/or video game time. There are several ways that children could earn this time, maybe they could walk for an hour with you or with friends, they could ride a bike for an hour, or you could have them play at the park for a while on a regular basis. The most important thing here is consistency children need to engage in some type of behavior that will get their hearts pumping and their lungs working. If these are not options for you then you might want to consider enrolling them in sports, martial arts, or any other team or group activity. There are also groups like the Boy Scouts of America which also engage in physical activities like hikes. You just need to be creative and remember that your goal is to give your child every advantage which means physical and mental health, which are components of academic success. With studies like the one mentioned by Bergland it is becoming highly evident that children need to be active to develop a healthy mind and body.
