As Father’s Day approaches, many celebrity dads are being celebrated for the paternal bonds they have engendered, both biologically and through adoption processes.
Ty Burrell, best known for his role as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, is enjoying life with his own “modern family” as an adoptive father of two girls, ages 2 and 4.
Since becoming a father, Ty has embraced a new perspective on what it means to love, telling ELLE magazine, “This might sound really dumb, but I guess I didn’t realize that you actually fall in love with children, that like with any other relationship, as time goes on you actually love them more…Now I’m at that point where I miss her when she’s asleep.”
Ewan McGregor, known for his roles in Moulin Rouge!, Big Fish, and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, has four daughters- two biological and two adoptive.
As an experienced father of four, Ewan expelled his candid parenting advice about “being there” in the March issue of Men’s Health magazine, saying: “Pay attention: I recognize it can be boring to play with young children – to tell a story over and over again, let’s say – but the secret is being there. If you’ve made a decision to play with your children, then play with them. Don’t be looking through papers on your desk or sneaking off to the computer. Turn off your BlackBerry. Lose yourself in their world. Even if you do it for a short time, it will mean a lot to you and to them” (Robertson, Carolyn, “Ewan McGregor’s Advice to Parents”).
Brad Pitt, known for his roles in Inglourious Basterds, Fight Club, Ocean’s Eleven, and Moneyball, currently has one of the biggest families in Hollywood. He and partner, Angelina, have six children in total- three biological children and three adopted children- with no reservations when it comes to the topic of expanding.
Brad briefly touched on his family’s dynamics and logic for adopting in the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “There’s a really nice balance in the house right now, but if we see the need and get that lightning bolt that says, ‘We can help this person; we could do something here,’ then absolutely” (“Brad Pitt”, Radar Online).
Other Celebrity Dads Who Have Adopted Include:
Lionel Richie: One adopted daughter, Nicole Richie.
Steven Spielberg: Two adopted children, Theo and Mikaela.
Hugh Jackman: Two adopted children, Oscar and Eva.
Tom Cruise (with then-wife, Nicole Kidman): Two adopted children, Isabella and Connor.
