Whether the decision is made by choice or necessity, adopting a child can be a very fulfilling experience. Many have chosen to make “children of the heart” a part of their nuclear family. In this spirit, adoptions by celebrity dads have been on the increase over the last several years. Many prominent men have taken steps to further their family name and carry on their lineage by adopting a child. Since Father’s Day is coming, I thought that it would be appropriate to shine the spotlight on some of these special dads.
You may recognize these names:
Married to actress Katherine Heigl, this celebrity dad tweeted, “I love my little chickadees.” Kelley and his wife adopted two girls, one a newborn at the time.
This adoption could have been taken straight out of a movie script. The daughter of one of Richie’s band mates came to live with him and his wife at age three due to financial challenges that the birth parents were experiencing. Six years later, Richie and his wife adopted her. Nicole Richie later became a famous socialite and was best known for her highly publicized friendship with Paris Hilton.
Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw added two adoptive kids — a boy and a girl — in multicultural adoptions to their already blended brood. The couple founded a charity, the Children’s Action Network, to provide education about adoption and fostering.
Best known for his recurring role as Wolverine on “The X-Men,” Jackman and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, made the somewhat controversial decision to adopt mixed-race children, a boy and a girl. Jackman stated in a 2009 interview with Celebrity Babies that their decision was a “no-brainer.” He and his wife’s primary criteria for adoption was that the children be healthy.
Aside from being celebrities, Pitt and his wife, Angelina Jolie are most famous for their multi-child adoptions. They added three adoptive kids to their biological progeny of three existing children and have plans to adopt again, according to news reports. Pitt and his wife are no strangers to overseas adoptions, and it is rumored that their next child will be from Ethiopia.
Cruise and now ex-wife Nicole Kidman adopted a son and a daughter shortly after marrying in 1990 after Kidman miscarried early in the marriage.
Adoptions by celebrity dads occur so frequently now that they’ve almost become commonplace. The publicity gained from these types of adoptions has been a positive thing and in all likelihood will inspire others that adopting a child is a good thing for both the individual family and society at large.
Happy Father’s Day!
