Father’s Day is coming and it’s a great time to reflect on those dads in our lives that mean so much to us. Normally, celebrities catch our attention with an outrageously skimpy outfit, a fantastic new summer movie or maybe a newsworthy scandal. But even some of the most well-known celebrities act in a way that just melts your heart.
One of the most iconic cartoon creators of all time, Walt Disney, was known for the selfless adoption of his daughter Sharon. His wife, Lillian, had trouble conceiving. They went through times of struggle to produce children, as indicated in a “Window on Main Street” article by WdW Central in 2008, which included a heartbreaking miscarriage in the mid 1930s. According to the Disney Family Museum, the Disney’s adopted Sharon Mae Disney in 1936. She lived to be 57 and was a well-documented philanthropist. After her death in 1993, CalArts described how her estate donated $11 million to the California Institute of the Arts.
Known for his outrageous stage theatrics and rock ‘n roll Hall of Famer, metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne had a soft spot for his children. Osbourne adopted his former wife Thelma’s son Elliot in 1966. The couple later had two more children, and he claimed due to the influence of drugs, was unable to remember their births. As reported to Daily Mail, Osbourne later divorced and married Sharon, and had three more children. Whom we all know from the popular curse word ridden television program “The Osbournes”
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s leading men. He is well known for his latest film Oblivion and several public rocky marriages that have ended in divorce. However, there has been some who benefit from his stardom. Namely his adopted children, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise told People magazine in 2006 that he came from a poor Catholic upbringing, and he jumped at the chance to improve the life of a child in need. During his marriage to Kidman, the couple adopted two children, Isabella Jane, and Connor Antony. Unfortunately due to differences in 2001 the couple split, reported by Huffington Post, and later led to a very public divorce. To the dismay of Kidman, who fought hard for custody of the children, it was Tom who maintained custody.
Finally, we have super-dad Brad Pitt. He is known not only for his relentless and undying support of his wife actress Angelina Jolie, but for taking in and loving undesired poor children from many countries around the world. Nowadays the Jolie-Pitts have quite the flock of children wherever they go. All happily holding hands while navigating through endless paps snapping photos. Brad Pitt has legally taken in Angelina’s 2 foreign adopted children, as well as having three of their own together, including twins. CNN News reported in June 2006 that Pitt had adopted 3-month-old Zahara from Ethiopia, and after her return from Vietnam in 2007, he also adopted 3-year-old Pax. CBS news confirmed that he had requested Paxs’ last name changed to Jolie-Pitt.
Being a dad is about caring, selfless giving, support and above all love. These dads, like many of our own, are a shining example of how we want to be in life for our own children. Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads. Famous, or not.
