I would like to speak on the topic of accountability and how you can improve in that area of your life or business. Accountability is incredible when people work with you and make sure that you’re getting done what you say you’re going to do. Making sure you’re really sticking to your goals and sticking to the actions that are going to help get you there. One thing I’ve noticed I do all the time, and I’m pretty sure many of you do the same thing, is you have that list of things to do that constantly keeps changing and you put way too many things on it.
A good friend was telling me that they’re pretty good at sticking to projects, and if they start something, they’re pretty good at finishing it. If they set a goal, they’re pretty good at reaching it, except when it comes to going to the gym. They can always find excuses as to why they don’t have to go to the gym for the day. So he made a really good point. I said, my ultimate goal would be to go to the gym five times a week. Maybe four, or five… preferably five. And he said, well you know, if you’re getting frustrated with not going five times a week, maybe you just need to start small. Do two times a week but do it consistently, for three or four weeks in a row. And then maybe bump it up to three, instead of trying to go from being on and off, to five times every week. That’s really tough.
And so I did the same thing. I thought that’s a great idea and then later on I was talking with my friend and we said okay, we’re going to do a morning accountability or email. Letting each other know what we’re going to do for the day. And then in the evening, chat about whether or not we achieved it. Well, on the first day, I wrote down four things. I think I only got one done. So if you are one who is constantly expecting too much out of yourself, when it comes to accountability, don’t put yourself down. What I want you to do is pick two or three things a day, that you know you can get done. Anything over that is icing on the cake.
So don’t get down on yourself with accountability when you’re not getting seven, eight, nine things that you want to get done in a single day. I want you to chill out, pick two or three things, and get them done. You will love how nice it’s going to feel. I’m guilty of it. I know many people are guilty of it. So accountability is awesome, just don’t expect too much.
