The year is now 2014, and according to a 2013 Pew Research Survey, 61 percent of mobile phone users own a smartphone. In addition, 80 percent of the young adult population owns a smartphone. Of course, in addition to access to apps, music, and a high resolution camera, one also has the option of watching podcasts, to which one subscribes to a particular subject and watches regularly. For the avid surfers “surfing” the web for podcasts, I have compiled a list of the five best surfing podcasts to add to the experience and enjoyment of this exciting and challenging sport.
SurfSimply. With a five-star rating, this series easily tops my list. The creators focus on technique and are devoted to actually teaching you “specific skills and drills”. There is no beating around the bush trying to teach you elusive terms and jargon in the hopes of filling up time. Because it is so specific, one can easily recognize and correct his/her mistakes. With the amount I learned in such a short amount of time, I couldn’t wait to get out on the water again to put it all to the test. The platform is free on iTunes, meaning that you can conveniently access it on your Apple device.
Surf Splendor. If you want to take a break from learning, or think you have reached your peak (you never do), then make sure to give a listen to Surf Splendor, another well known podcast which simply consists of conversations about surfing; a must for any surfer or fan who wants to immerse him/herself in surfing culture. The podcasts are available on iTunes on which they are free, or you can stop by the website which includes supplemental media and information.
Transworld Surf. Also available for free on iTunes, this podcast rightfully claims to talk about anything and everything related to surfing. Their open nature is illustrated by their encouragement that “all gloves are off” and that “kilos of weighty issues and topics” are discussed. There are also segments included, such as trivia, fact or fiction, and the top 5 stories of the week.
RipCurl. This podcast is not very informative but instead serves more of an entertaining purpose. It is essentially a compilation of immaculate camerawork and high quality footage that captures the raw intensity and adrenaline of surfing the monstrous waves. It is enjoyable to watch a few times a week in between training as a form of motivation of what you can soon become. This series is also available for free on iTunes.
The Surf Yak. This is a podcast on the Surf Station about surfing based in St. Augustine, Florida. It is hosted by The Grinch and Talking Tom and produced by Rachel. The material discussed ranges from interviews with guests to personal narratives and experiences. There are also rants and talk about global and local news. Although it’s not very popular, it is still enjoyable and worth listening to because of the personable and amiable characters. Sources:
