When it comes time to kick dairy, this guide will help you out. There are all kinds of non-dairy milks available on the market today. Here I will go over a few of your options, to help you make the transition from being vegetarian to going vegan a lot easier. Or if you are already vegan and just looking for new milk products to try, this guide can also be very helpful. One of the cool things about non-dairy milks is that there are all kinds of flavors of each brand to choose from (i.e. sweetened, unsweetened, original, vanilla, chocolate, etc.) Another nice thing about non-dairy milks is that they can either be bought refrigerated or shelf-stable, making it easier to stock up and buy in bulk, and making your vegan milk supply last longer. Keep reading to find out more. Lets start off with a few of my favorite vegan milk products:
1.) Soy Milk
Soy milk is one of the most obvious, popular, and easiest to find non-dairy milk options on the market today. This non-dairy milk is made from soybeans and actually contains just as much protein as regular milk. It is also a rich source of calcium and vitamin D. Soy milk can be very inexpensive to purchase since a lot of stores make generic brands that sell anymore from $2-4. Kroger has pretty good soy milk. Other brands I enjoy are Silk, Soy Dream , and Earth Balance: Soy Milk.
2.) Almond Milk
Another popular non-dairy favorite of mine is Almond Milk–made from–you guessed it–almonds! This popular non-dairy milk is quite tasty and has a nutty flavor to it. The texture is a little thicker than soy milk, but its delicious! This non-dairy option is also great for any vegan with a food allergy to soy, since it is soy free! This milk product is a high source of fiber, protein, calcium, and Vitamin E. The nice thing about almond milk is that you can even make it at home. Its super easy! Many local supermarkets and natural food stores also offer generic store bought brands of almond milk, that are just as good, if not better than the other more popular name brands, so check around if you are looking to save a bit of money. A few of my favorite name brand Almond Milks include Blue Diamond: Almond Breeze, Silk: Pure Almond, and So Delicious: Almond Plus. Another one of my favorite Almond Milk choices is Chocolate Almond Milk, which a number of different companies sell.
3.) Sunflower Milk
Although Sunflower Milk is a little harder to find, and not as well known as other non-dairy milks I haven’t mentioned yet, I’ve taken the liberty of putting it third on the list because I actually prefer it over some of the other milks I will talk about in a minute. Sunflower milk can be found at places like your local Whole Foods Market, and is made from sunflower kernels, one of nature’s post potent superfoods. One of my favorite Sunflower Milk brands is SōL.
4.) Rice Milk
Another popular non-dairy milk choice is Rice Milk, which is a grain milk processed from rice. Rice Milk is typically a lot sweeter than other non-dairy milks, which makes it great for baking. It is also another one of the vegan milks that is soy free and nut free, which is ideal for vegans with soy or nut allergies. My favorite brand of Rice Milk is Rice Dream. This company also offers Chocolate Rice Milk, Vanilla Rice Milk, and Horchata.
5.) Coconut Milk
Another popular non-dairy milk choice is Coconut Milk. I personally don’t care for it only because I don’t really like the taste of coconut, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying it if you’re not picky and enjoy the coconut taste. In fact, if you love the taste of coconut, you will probably love this milk just as much– it is made from coconut water obtained from the “meat” of coconuts. This non-dairy treat is a great source of calcium and vitamins B12 and D. I’m told that a good Coconut Milk brand is So Delicious.
6.) Hemp Milk
Hemp Milk is another vegan milk you might try and like. Made from hemp seeds and resembling a nutty taste somewhat similar to Almond Milk, this non-dairy milk has quickly become a top contender when it comes to vegan milks. One of the things that makes this milk stand out is the fact that its rich in protein and also in 10 essential amino acids, including omega 3 and omega 6. Soy and nut free, this milk is another dairy alternative that works great for those with food allergies. Two good brands of Hemp milk include Tempt and Pacific Organic.
7.) Non-Dairy Creamers
Perhaps my favorite non-dairy item that I have come across thus far since becoming vegan, are the non-dairy creamers available at the nature market at your local Kroger, Whole Foods, Plum Market, etc. My favorite are the soy milk non-dairy creamers by Silk. They offer 3 delicious flavors: Original, French Vanilla, and Hazelnut. These products have made my vegan coffee drinking experience so much better! These creamers have quickly become a staple in my refrigerator and in my heart as well.
