Bike The Bricks
Start off the summer with a bicycle race on Friday, May 23rd, from 4 – 11pm. McKinney has hosted this race since 2010. With a prize of $25,000, it attracts racers more than just the local racers. Starting from Mitchell Park, it winds around the historic district, including the Square, at 40 miles per hour. From modest beginnings, this race has grown to one of the most anticipated events in McKinney in just a few short years.
Looking for an event that has it all? The Smiles Charity concert offers a headlining act, WWII plane flyover, bounce houses, games and activities, food, and fireworks – for free admission on Sunday, May 25th, from 5pm – 10pm. Donations support building homes for wounded veterans. Since 2011, Adriatica at Stonebridge in west McKinney has been entertaining and giving back with this great festival.
Stonebridge Memorial Day Race
If you can’t get enough of athleticism with biking on Friday, or Stonebridge on Sunday, then join the road race on Monday, May 26th. Registration starts at 7, with the 1K at 7:45am, the 5K at 8am, and the 10K at 8:10am. The Memorial Day race is one of many at Stonebridge, but certainly one of the bright spots of the summer. Before the Texas heat gets too hot, meet up at the bell tower in Adriatica and enjoy the fun. Stonebridge embraces its runners like few local communities.
Pecan Grove Cemetery Memorial Day Tribute
I grew up in McKinney. For me, the pinnacle of Memorial Day can only be the Pecan Grove Cemetery Memorial Tribute. My grandfather was a WWII veteran. If you want to remember those who served, and lost, for their country, then you have to be at this tribute. It’s both beautifully moving, and the old-fashioned, small town charm that draws people to McKinney. 2014 marks 30 years of continuous tributes; the event begins at 9:30am, Monday, May 26th. Special guests include Ross Perot, the Honorable Ralph Hall, and the Honorable Sam Johnson.
Whether you are looking to party, or looking to remember, McKinney, Texas knows how to commemorate Memorial Day. From the new to the traditional, there’s something for everyone at the end of May. Ask a local, and you may never forget how we kick off summer.
