Yard sales and flea markets abound in the sunny state of Florida. It’s true – but maybe you’re looking for something a bit more high-end the next time you do your household shopping. Check out this quick guide to four of the best-known (and loved) antique malls and vendors in the Sarasota and Charlotte county areas.
Galleria Mall Antiques & Collectibles, located in Punta Gorda, was established in 2007 with the charming motto: “I once was a treasure from someone’s past, now looking for a home to rest at last.” The saying holds eminently true here – the store has been consecutively awarded first place in the Charlotte Sun‘s Reader’s Choice awards from 2008-2011, and it continues to enjoy much business today. Just a few items in their eclectic collection include furniture, tea sets, musical instruments, paintings, books, linens, and many more household goods. Not only is the merchandise offered tops, but the establishment also has several other amenities and attractive features – such as wheelchair accessibility, wide aisles for exploring, air conditioning, and a welcoming attitude towards pets. The Galleria Mall is open from 10am-4pm six days a week. www.galleriamallantiques.com
Another store not to be missed is Jack Vinales Antiques, located in Sarasota since 1989. They specialize in selling objects and fine arts from the twentieth century, with an emphasis on modern art and design from the 30s to the 60s. The modern “pop” theme is complemented by offerings of unique Bakelite jewelry, designer sterling, “fiestaware,” and much more. They also purchase items to display in their store. Jack Vinales has been written up in multiple publications since their opening, and the Sarasota Herald‘s readers have honored them for the last several years with the annual Best Antiques Shop award. You can visit the store year-round Mondays through Saturdays from 11am-5pm, and the first Friday of every month till 9pm. www.jackvinalesantiques.com
Maybe you’re looking more along the lines of collectibles. In that case, the aptly-named Herb’s Coins, Stamps, & Baseball Cards has you covered. Herb set up shop in Port Charlotte in 1975, and business has only taken off from there. The store boasts an impressive collection of currency from around the world, buying and selling gold/silver bullion, rare coins, and scrap metal. The stamps and sports memorabilia are also not to be overlooked. Best of all, the store’s owner is trustworthy and fair – check out the customer testimonials on the website! Herb’s is open from 7am-3pm Monday through Friday (7am-11am on Saturday), and closed Wednesdays and Sundays. There’s also an online store if you can’t make it in person. www.herbscoinshop.com
St. Armand’s Antiques and Gifts, located in the charming island shopping center of the same name in Sarasota, is a tour de force of antique and household goods, showing off everything from religious iconography and designer accessories to vintage clothing and costume jewelry. While you’ll want to make a personal visit to soak in the lovely atmosphere, you can also make purchases online. St. Armand’s Antiques is open from 11am-5pm every day except Wednesday and Sunday. www.starmandsantiques.com
