With the vast comedy shows that are on television these days, it is hard to believe that none of them could be a great comedy, but they can’t compare to the old black and white comedy , “I Love Lucy”. Starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz along with co-stars Vivian Vance and William Frawley, “I Love Lucy” is by far a classic comedy and one of the best ever shown on television.
“I Love Lucy” first aired on October 15, 1951 and ran six years, but after 63 years there are still daily reruns of the show. Classic comedy and comedy that is not under written or hidden in the show makes this a great comedy. No matter where you travel in the world, you will find a Lucy fan. Lucille Ball was a wonderful and talented actress. She made movies, but she is best known for her Lucy roll. Her talent showcased in the show is one reason the show is a comedy great.
During it’s run, “I Love Lucy” was the most watched show during four of the six seasons that it aired. Fans were thrilled when CBS aired a color version of the Christmas show in December of 2013. Can you imagine a show that was aired over sixty years ago being changed by adding color and attracting over 8 million viewers? When I think of the comedies that are on today, I can’t imagine any of them having that result.
The writers of the show were absolutely genius with the shows that they wrote. Scenes like Lucy and Ethel working in the candy factory is just pure comedy. As the assembly line begins to move faster and the ladies are trying to keep up, they begin to eat the candy as well as to throw it on the floor, stuff it in their clothes and under their hats. There is nothing said during this particular section of the show, but it is the funniest part of the episode. Pure comedy! Lucille Ball was known for being able to showcase her physical comedy and her antics in keeping Ricky in astonishment that she can get into so much trouble are what made the show a truly great comedy.
