So, it’s late, and you need to sleep, or maybe not, but all the restaurants are closed. So sleep. There’s your late night snack solution, right there. It’s terrible to eat so late, and breakfast is only a few hours away. There’s a reason it’s called breakfast, and if you’re still here you obviously don’t care. Okay, fine, I’ll enable your decision with some satisfying solutions that will fill you up and make it nearly impossible to awaken later. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Most likely you are hungry because you haven’t eaten since dinner, or supper depending on where you are, but regardless, it’s been hours since you had some sustenance. Don’t make the mistake of having a fourth meal, though, just think about the children! At this point you may be thinking with the capacity of one of them (children) so pots and pans are out of the question. Let’s forget about the recipe part. I bet you have popcorn though.
1. Popcorn. If you are gonna be awake with a rumble in your tum tummy tum tum you can spare 3 minutes for some popped grass seed. Yeah, its a grass, and yeah it’s a seed, but more importantly it has tons of starches, or carbohydrates, OR sugar. And that precious sugar is going to metabolize quickly (and deliciously), and….AND…it’s going to make you sleepy. Essentially, you are sleep strategizing by forcing yourself to carb crash. Eat the corn first.
2. Iced Cream. If you ain’t got no corn, maybe you have some iced cream (or ice cream as the yankees call it), and hopefully you have some chocolate syrup too. If you have ice cream, though, it’s fine by itself. Why it’s still sitting in your freezer is a question for the ages, but you bought it for tonight. Eat it. If you have any type of syrup it will top this finely flavored dairy product nicely, regardless. Maple, Jemima, Simple, chocolate or one of the weird strawberry types of syrups will do especially at this hour (you won’t care and you know it). Ice cream alone will help you to sleep due to the whole carb crash phenomenon described above.
3. Chili. So you don’t want a carb crash and you are truly, and wholeheartedly hungry. Maybe you didn’t fulfill your nutrition dreams with dinner, or maybe you need to watch your carb intake. Chili is the way to go, but who has a hot bowl of chili at their beckon call? Here’s where it gets real, and weird, maybe real weird, but you should ALWAYS have a good serving or two of chili in your fridge, and you should eat it cold. Yeah, sounds gross, I’m sure, but trust me cold chili will be your next favorite late night snack. It will fill you up, or seem to because of the sodium. It has a pretty good nutritional value, especially for dieters, and it has just what you need late at night when you get that craving for (Insert __________). By nature chili has like every ingredient known to man, so it will satisfy almost any craving. It’s spicy so you won’t need to eat much of it, and it keeps for a while because of all the hot hot heat it contains (chili’s low pH will keep little tiny buggers out). Give cold chili a try one night, I bet you become an advocate.
Why aren’t you asleep? Ok, fine, so those three don’t suit you well? I get it. You don’t have them. Emergency time.
Raid your cabinet, find any kind of cream of whatever soup, such as cream of corn or cream of mushroom soup and slam them down. You can eat them straight from the can, usually, and it won’t take too long to heat them up. “Cream of” soups usually have max carbs just like the first two solutions above and will help you sleep a little while after you consume them. Because they are soups they will have some electrolyte type minerals too so you shouldn’t feel too bad about eating them mid fast.
So you’re still here….and you’re still hungry, huh? OK, OK, OK, I’m gonna do my best to help you out. Here’s a list of some other best midnight snacks ever; most of them should be served cold and straight from the package:
Chinese Take Out Leftovers
Anything In a Can (Including Beer)
ugh…ok, fine I’ll admit it…cold pizza is the best midnight snack. Forget everything else. Order a pizza. Put it in the fridge for an hour. If you’re still awake after that then you’ll have some fresh cold pizza.
