I am new to the Yahoo Contributor Network. After I learned the ins and outs of submitting content and getting paid, my next burning question was “how do other contributors spend their time?”.
Because I’m so new it’s hard to tell if I’m on the right track, but I thought that I would share my routine with my fellow contributors. Maybe the more experienced contributors will get a chuckle out of it, but my hope is that it’ll help other newbies like myself to see how someone else is making this platform work for them.
5:45 AM – My alarm goes off. I promise myself that I’ll go to bed earlier tonight and know I won’t. I pick out clothes for the kids and help the littlest one get dressed so that he doesn’t go to school with his shirt on backwards or his shoes on the wrong feet.
6:30-??? – We stand outside together and wait on the bus to come. It’s usually late.
7:20 – My husband leaves for work and I start my day.
9:00 – By now I’ve checked Facebook and the contributor forums and have downed at least 2 mugs of caffeinated tea. I’m ready to focus on writing.
9:00-2:30 – This is the bulk of my work day. The house is quiet and I can concentrate entirely on writing. I work on my assignments first. After I write the first draft of an article, I check the assignment desk for new assignments that I feel confident I can write authentically.
I add any ideas for potential articles to my idea notebook whenever they occur to me and jot down quick outlines if enough details come to me while I’m writing it down. If an idea has enough details to support a full article, I write it immediately. Otherwise I just leave the note for future consideration.
2:30-6:00 – I write off and on if I find a pocket of time, but most of my attention is on my family during this period. I help with homework, fix dinner, and catch up on my husband’s day.
6:00-9:00 – My husband and kids head off to do their own things (usually video games) and I’m free to do whatever I want. I try to do a course or two from the Academy and write at least one more article.
9:00-11:00 – I put the kids to bed and then watch some TV with my husband. Then it’s time for bed. I swear that tomorrow night I’m going to bed earlier and know that I won’t. I fall asleep before my head hits the pillow.
I’ve been averaging four submissions a day with this schedule, but I have no doubt as I get more adept at managing distractions that I’ll be able to boost that number. Because I’m home all day, my goal is to submit at least five articles a day during the week and two or three on Saturday and Sunday.
I would love to hear from other contributors what your schedules are like. Do you fit your writing around a full time job? Please feel free to share in the comments.
