Memorial Day weekend is a fun holiday for my family. We like to have 25 to 30 people over to celebrate with our children. It is important to have a barbecue atmosphere that is warm and inviting. Here is a complete shopping guide to have the most amazingly fun barbecues.
We have our barbecues in our backyard in a way where there are two long tables and then a few card tables and chairs so that people can sit and mingle. We like the Mainstays card tables and chairs. They are very affordable and we can easily fold and unfold them and place them in our garage. The tables that we use are Ozark Trail ones. It is a good idea for people to place cushions on the seats. This helps to add additional padding for guests.
We also put out small kiddie pools and totes where people can place any belongings that they have with them. This helps to keep the area organized and the kids occupied while they wait for the food.
Barbecuing food for guests takes a lot of supplies. We usually buy large roasting pans and then make large batches of food. We use Gladware bowls to marinate the food and then we cook dishes every two hours to keep things warm and restocked. We use the Rosewood three piece barbecue set. We use a Coleman Roadtrip LXE propane grill as well. Utensils that we use are from Dixie and they look similar to silverware and are disposable. We also have red, white and blue napkins, plates and cups that we get from party stores.
Dishes We Prepare
I think that food is essential to having a fun barbecue. We serve chicken, tilapia, corn on the cob, fruit skewers, macaroni salad, potato salad, baked potatoes, smores, hamburgers and hot dogs. We also let people decorate their own cookies and we even have a pinata for the kids so that they can enjoy the festivities. The menu often depends on who is coming to the barbecue. It is important to be able to accommodate everyone’s tastes. We marinade most of our items in Hunt’s barbecue sauce.
We use white Tiki string lights in our back yard. We also use Newhouse solar tiki torches as well. My husband also puts up red, white and blue Christmas lights to light the area. It takes some time to put up the lights, but it is essential when trying to light a large area.
Each person has a place card and a special place mat made by my kids with their names on them. We also do fun grab bags with little Memorial Day treats in them such as cookies, jellybeans and bubbles. You can make the event special with choosing gifts that people will like. For entertainment, we use an Ipod dock and a sound bar with Bluetooth capability from Sony that allows us to play music outdoors for guests.
