As a writer, I am constantly scanning news websites, especially those involving health or safety issues. It’s not very often that I find three separate things that affect one group of people. But it happened, and in this case, it’s babies.
Dialysis: Some infants, especially premature infants, have very poor kidney function. Previously dialysis machines for adults were adapted for infant use. The problem is that it is very hard to make an exact change, which could create as many problems as it solves.
Doctors in Italy have come up with an infant-sized dialysis machine. This machine is already credited with saving the life of one newborn. The child now has only mild kidney disease and is thriving. The company that makes the machines are doing so at cost…no profit for them. This will make it easier for hospitals to acquire them.
RSV: Respiratory Syncytial Virus is a common virus infecting young children. It can be fatal in babies, especially if they already have other underlying medical conditions. The disease hospitalized 125,000 children last year and accounted for 1.5 million visits to the doctor’s office.
Researchers just finished a human trial of a new drug to treat it. The medication is so new it doesn’t even have a name yet. It’s called GS-5806. This could save the lives of many children and help others get well faster.
Baby Spa: This tickled my funny bone; the idea that a baby might need a spa day. At first it looks like something someone with too much money and far too little sense would agree to. The picture is of several babies in floating rings in a pool. Most of them look quite happy, but one does not.
The idea is that babies that can’t yet crawl or walk want to be able to move. They may also remember being in the womb. The water is about 90 degrees, so it could trigger that memory. The parents stay on the outside of the special pool, keeping an eye on their youngsters.
After the pool, the parents are taught the basics of infant massage. While the hydrotherapy is new, infant massage is not. Studies have shown that this is beneficial to the baby and to the bonding between parent and child.
Doing the research for this article has been a good experience. There are so many bad things out there having good news to share for a change is refreshing.
