I’m not a nail tech but I am a professional makeup artist and stylist. One of the most common questions I get asked, (besides “Do I have cool or warm tones?” or “Can I wear a smoky eye?”) is what can I do about breaking nails? Hmm…that’s a question I had to find an answer to since I have the same problem. I’m constantly submerging my hands in makeup and creams and even though I have to keep them short, I do like neat nails.
After testing some products and asking some nail professionals in my salon, I can pass on these 7 tips that should stop nails from breaking. Are you ready to grow stronger, more beautiful nails?
Invest in cuticle cream. The key to healthy nails begins at the nail bed. Keeping those cuticles moist and healthy will lead to healthier nails. I’m told that you should use cuticle cream every other day-at the very least once a week. Push back the cuticles and keep the nails snag free.
Wear gloves before you get your hands wet. With the exception of showering or bathing, you should be wearing gloves. Water weakens the nails temporarily. That’s long enough to leave them vulnerable to breaking and tearing. Always wear gloves when you wash dishes-or the dog.
Don’t pry with your fingernails. Fingernails are handy tools for prying off stickers but that’s a big no-no. Even this seemingly innocent activity can break a nail. Break the habit; don’t break your nails.
Pop a multivitamin each day. According to WebMD, low iron can leave fingernails fragile. Take a multivitamin each day-especially prenatal vitamins will strengthen those nails. It may take a few weeks to see an improvement but taking a good multivitamin can only help!
Drink the recommended amount of water. Wondering why your nails are chipping and splitting? Sometimes a water deficiency is to blame. Drink more water, less caffeine. (I know, I love my coffee.)
Use a base and top coat on your fingernails. Don’t apply fingernail polish directly to your nail. Build the strength of your nails by using a base coat, nail polish and a top coat.
Moisturize with tea tree oil. My nail tech pals recommend tea tree oil moisturizers for your fingernails. Not only does it smell great but it really gets into the nail bed and moisturizes deeply.
Try these tips and get stronger nails. It won’t happen overnight but you can improve your nail health.
