Not just a time for fun in the sun, summer is famous for bringing out the best [and worst] of the film industry. The film list of summer 2014 however, seems to have one trending theme in common; sequels. So without further ado, sit back, grab some popcorn, and check out seven of the most anticipated film sequels of summer 2014.
1.) The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2, 2014)
‘The Amazing Spiderman’, released in 2012, beat the odds. This new spin on an old Marvel comic franchise had a budget of $230 million and raked in a whopping $62,004,688 in its opening weekend in the U.S. alone. Now, two years and a major fan-following later, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ is currently in theaters. The cast includes major names like Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Andrew Garfield, and more.
2.) The Protector 2 (May 2, 2014)
‘The Protector’, released in 2006, is a martial arts action film surrounding a story of strength, courage, corruption, and revenge. Tony Jaa [Ong Bak] returns in ‘The Protector 2’, for a bloody battle of survival. Having lost everything he loves, he is caught in a war he does not wish to fight. He uses “the most powerful, and greatest technique ever to exist” to escape from those who would want him dead. This would be a great summer film for all the action/martial arts lovers to look into.
3.) X-Men-Days of Futures Past (May 23, 2014)
Another major Marvel campaign to be released this summer is an addition to the X-Men franchise. ‘X-Men:Days Of Futures Past’ sets the tone with Professor Xavier asking for his pupils [namely Wolverine] to go back into the past and to find the Professor’s younger self to help end the war between humans and mutants before it ever begins. The concept is something that has not been touched yet in the X-Men series, bringing in a new dynamic to the already well-known characters.
4.) Transformers 4: Age Of Extinction (June 27, 2014)
This Michael Bay directed, action packed film is sure to appease the long time fans of the Transformers series. Mark Wahlberg Stars as Cade Yeager in this comic-based sequel. Cade is a Texan father who has an old, dusty truck in his garage. However, he begins to notice something about this truck seems fairly unusual. He comes to the conclusion that it just may be a Transformer, and not long after that the FBI is on his tail, taking himself and his daughter into custody and asking questions about Optimus Prime. The few Transformers who remained on earth and humans are at odds, and some humans feel that Transformers are no longer needed on our planet. A war between metal and flesh insues, and Optimus must emerge from hiding to save earth. This old cartoon favorite gets a live action spin this summer in its fourth installment.
5.) How To Train Your Dragon 2 (June 13, 2014)
Nightfury the dragon [A.K.A. ‘Toothless’] and her courageous, viking, human best friend, Hiccup join forces once again in the sequel to ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. In this film, the humans and dragons seem to have learned to live rather peacefully among each other. However, their utopia is in sudden danger and dragons and vikings are enemies once again. The Young Hiccup must save his people with the help of his friends and Nightfury.
6.) 22 Jump Street (June 13, 2014)
In this comedy sequel, Schmidt and Jenko are at it again, but this time they’re going to college. There is a drug problem that they need to go undercover to investigate. The two survived high school, and are now on the case in higher education.
7.) Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (July 11, 2014)
Planet Of The Apes is an enormous franchise, spanning over the years since the 60’s, releasing numerous films and television shows. Now, in the year 2014, a new breed of war between ape and man breaks out in “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes”. Human survivors of a lab-made virus contracted by apes about a decade prior are wary of what these very intelligent and calculating apes are capable of now. The humans and apes come to a shaky compromise but eventually come to an inevitable place of war among the races.
2014 is a promising summer of explosions, romance, adventure, and fun at the movies that is sure to blow away moviegoers of all ages.
