No one wants to be an easy mark for a burglary, but little things we do (or don’t do) can make our home easy pickings for someone with a mindset to steal our stuff. Implement these 6 things at home so you can fool a thief and bungle the burglary and keep the stuff you’ve worked hard to acquire.
I have four-legged, barking door bells, no one sets foot on my property without triggering a cacophony of barking dogs. That’s a good thing, but not everyone has this pleasure. Fake it until you can make by adopting a fake dog. Hang a ‘Beware of Dog’ sign in plain view and add an electronic, motion-detecting device to your indoor or outdoor landscape that will bark and growl when it detects motion.
Fake Being at Home
If the same lights remain on inside the house 24/7, that’s a sure sign no one is at home. Fool a thief by connecting a few lamps, TVs and radios to automatic timers and program them to come on during various times of day and night. The changing sight and sound emitting from inside the home just might bungle the burglary.
Fake Surveillance Cameras
Yes, a lot of faking goes into stopping someone from breaking and entering your home and a fake surveillance camera or two is part of a home owner’s arsenal. Install a couple hanging surveillance cameras outside your home in plain view. Fake cameras that look real, completely with flashing red light and motion-detecting movement, are affordable and easy to install.
Motion sensing lighting for outdoors is the way to go. Install a bright flood light over the garage entrance and on the corners of your home that will pick up motion within a certain perimeter and turn on. The motion-sensing light fixtures can be adjusted to the desired radius and shine a light on a would-be home intruder before he has the time to gain entry.
Where’s the Car?
Garage windows are not a good thing, they allow a thief to look in and see if your car is parked inside. Cover garage windows with shades or blinds so no one can peek through and see what’s inside.
I See the Signs
Buy a few fake alarm company stickers and signs to prominently display on your home’s windows and in the front yard. Most electronics or hardware stores carry these fakers and the signs may send the thief running away from your home instead of breaking and entering.
