How can I maximize my bus commute? You probably never asked yourself this question. While using this form of transportation, you either sleep or think of your impending work day. Big mistake! The time you spend as a passenger can pay off big if you play your cards right. Here’s what I like to do.
Bus riders are diverse. As a result, you might be sitting next to a factory worker or powerful exec. For this reason, I try to talk to fellow commuters and find out what they do for a living. This act alone has given me insider’s information about job openings and the culture of local companies.
Turn your gift into dollars. Start by selling to the people around you. Bus riders are a captive audience. You can easily strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you and sell them products. In my case, I let them know I am a freelance writer and steer them toward my articles.
Take care of business.
Maximize your bus commute by using your smartphone for something other than video games and long chats with friends and family about the same old stuff. Pay bills. Order groceries. Read and respond to important e-mails. This way, by the time you get home, you can actually rest. Get started down this path as I did by downloading apps to your bank and other key places you do business with.
Thwart off loneliness and expand your circle of friends. Extend the hand of friendship to another bus rider. I call them bus buddies, men and women who I mainly see while commuting, but find fun or interesting to interact with. The friends you make help riding the bus a more enjoyable experience.
Do your craft.
Knit. Draw. Write. All of these activities require focus and help you forget about a long bus ride. They are also relaxing acting as aide to take the edge off an eight hour (or longer) work shift. My craft of choice – crocheting. I’ve begun and finished many scarf patterns as a commuter.
