Heading back to school can be a dreadful proposition, particularly when coming off of a lengthy hiatus. You’ll learn just how terrible the experience was as I you roll out of bed at an ungodly hour, grabbed your bags, said good-bye to your family, and go on your way to put your nose back to the grindstone. If you anticipate the hardship though, and take some preparatory steps, you’ll manage to make the experience considerably easier.
Have a Good Vacation!
The first thing I was sure to do was to have a good vacation. Going back to school is going to yield a gut feeling of “I wish I had longer,” and it’s a real downer. It helps considerably though on a spiritual and psychological and even physical level if you have a great vacation to reflect on. Make sure every day is unique, restful, and full of time with people you love.
Prepare in Advance!
Preparing in advance is essential to making the transition back to school bearable. Before taking off for for winter vacation, for example, it helps tremendously to have bought and labeled all of your notebooks and folders for the next semester and leave them waiting in your desk for when you return to school. While small, these preparations should make it far easier for your zombie-like self to get back to work on campus.
Treating yourself is a simple but effective way to get back at it, but not burn out right away. It’s also a big psychological relief. It’s acceptable to have a hard time going back to school, and therefore it’s acceptable to treat yourself, too. Some candy and a few extra hours of relaxing throughout the week should make the transition less drastic and miserable.
Charts, budgets, calendars, it makes life much easier and keeps your grades much higher when you have some sort of track-able motivation to make sure you’re putting some quality into your hours.
Get after it! While we all miss home and vacation dearly, it’s likely we all accrue just the slightest spark of motivation to do something as we sit for our 12th or 13th day in a row of zero activity in anticipation of the coming semester. Utilize that spark right off the bat because it’ll get you back into a difficult-to-reach busy mode.
