Mother’s Day is one of those holidays that always seems to throw us for a loop when it comes to gift-giving. This year my family and I were trying to decide what to do for my grandma. Chocolates and jewelry seem to be pretty standard, and flowers do, too. They’re great gifts, but they’re almost expected. When we were brainstorming for ideas we came up with some pretty good ones, and I thought I would share them for anyone else looking for unique Mother’s Day ideas.
Flowers That Last
This is our favorite idea, and it’s part of what we’re doing for my grandma for this Mother’s Day. My grandma loves flowers, but since I take her flowers pretty regularly and flowers die so quickly, we wanted to give her something that would last a little longer. What we decided to do instead was take her to the local nursery or garden center and let her pick out a few flowers she would like in front of her home. Then we’re going to plant them and take her out to lunch or dinner. Every morning she’ll be able to look at the flowers and remember this Mother’s Day, and since she has a liking for perennials she’ll probably be enjoying them for many Mother’s Days to come.
If your grandma is truly classic and loves the older traditions of tea, tea parties, and so on, you might consider taking her to a tea room. Someone came up with this idea when I was trying to figure out what to do for my grandma’s 90th birthday, which is coming up in August. My grandma isn’t so much the tea-drinking type, but I can see where this idea would be really amazing for someone who did like such events. Tell your grandma or mom to put on something nice and take her to a local tea room or place that offers tea parties. Far from the ones you had with your toys as a kid a true tea party at a tea room is an exquisite and classy event that will almost take you back in time. Most places will make arrangements for Mother’s Day and other holidays so you’ll have reservations.
The Perfect Recipe
I had an idea for my grandma that I thought would be perfect, and one day we might use it for a holiday. My grandma is the world’s best baker. Of course, everyone thinks their mom or grandma is the world’s best baker. So if you have an exquisite baker or cook in your family who happens to be a mom, try sneaking some of her recipes and making a home-cooked meal or dessert party out of them. How great would it be to honor your mom or grandma’s long-standing traditional recipes by having the family make them and present them to her as a meal?
Scrapping it Together
A scrapbook is a great way to show someone how much you care about them. But it also shows them how you see them, your relationship, and what you remember most about the past. The year after my grandpa passed I made a scrapbook of my grandparents’ relationship from old pictures I found online and pictures I had taken as a kid. I tried to catalog their relationship as best I could. My grandma absolutely loved it, and she still looks at it fairly regularly even though it’s been 10 years. A Mother’s Day scrapbook would be a great idea for your mom, grandma, or other special person in your life because it allows you to show her the things that meant the most to you growing up and memorialize your relationship. You can even add a page every Mother’s Day as part of your gift, making it a sort of tradition.
The Event of the Generation…All of Them
If you have many generations of moms in your family and you don’t all regularly see each other, you might surprise your mom or grandma by inviting them all together and having a surprise party. Not only will it be great to have all the moms in your family reunited for Mother’s Day, but it will surely be an event to remember, not just for the surprised recipient, but for all the moms there. In fact, with a little genius and secretive planning, all the children could get together and plan it so it would be a surprise for all the moms. However you choose to do it, getting all the moms together in your family for a day celebrating moms will be a special treat they’ll remember forever.
We had a lot of great ideas come up as we were thinking of and seeking out ideas for an original Mother’s Day for my grandma, but these were the top five. Hopefully these ideas have helped you think of something to do for your mom, grandma, aunt, or other woman in your life this Mother’s Day. Whether you use one of the ideas above or you’ve thought of another great idea I hope you have a great Mother’s Day with your family.
