Obstacle Course Races and Mud Runs are events that include both the completion of obstacles and covering a specified distance. Obstacles can include monkey bars, climbing over walls, and jumping over fire. Distances can range from 3 miles to marathon length. Obstacle Course Races are usually timed sporting events with a bigger focus on competition. Mud Runs can be timed or not and may place the focus more on enjoyment.
I’ve participated in multiple Obstacle Course Races and Mud Runs and have found many reasons to continue signing up. Here are 5 reasons why women should sign up to participate in an Obstacle Course Race or Mud Run:
One of the main draw of both of these events is fun! Many times completing the run is not the only source of a good time. Companies like Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, and Warrior Dash have a festival area that includes live music, food, vendors, and activities to provide additional entertainment.
Do you crave to stand on a podium? Many Obstacle Course Races award money to female winners and keep rankings of their athletes. Some offer “elite waves” so you can test your abilities against other highly trained sportswomen (and men.) While I’ll probably never win an event, I enjoy watching super-athletes compete and feel proud that I am completing the same course!
3. No Competition
Do you dislike rivalry or games that end in winning or losing? Many Mud Runs choose to eliminate all of this from their events. Times aren’t recorded and everyone is equal at the end. Part of the motto of Dirty Girl, a women-only event, is “Dirty Girl 5k isn’t about who finishes first. It’s about embracing life’s messes, celebrating its obstacles, and helping our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends do the same.”
4. Friends, Teamwork, and Camaraderie
Completing an event with friends can provide an experience that strengthens relationships. Working together to overcome challenges while having fun can form an intense bond. Even if you don’t have a team to sign up with, Obstacle Course Races and Mud Runs provide unique opportunities to meet people. Many events promote camaraderie, and in every one I’ve attended by myself, I’ve never felt alone on the course. There were so many people willing to help each other, provide inspiration, or just talk to each other. I’ve met some of the most amazing females at Obstacle Course Races and Mud Runs!
5. Get Muddy and Feel Accomplished!
Do you remember how fun it was to play at a playground as a kid? Or to jump in a huge puddle? Obstacle Course Races and Mud Runs allow you to experience all that messy enjoyment again! Who says it’s not lady-like to play in the mud? Possibly the best part of all the muddy fun is the feeling of accomplishment you feel when you complete an event. Crossing the finish line provides a strong sense of achievement!
