Cupcakes are an ideal dessert for any Memorial Day weekend gathering, such as picnics, barbecues and potlucks. They are easy to make, portable and don’t require plates or utensils. Plus, they are delicious! If you are planning to bring cupcakes to your get-together, make them even more fun by decorating them to fit the holiday. These ideas are sure to impress.
If you are attending a Memorial Day barbecue, cupcakes decorated to look like miniature burgers are sure to bring loads of smiles.
Make a batch of white cupcakes and allow them to cool. Make chocolate cake batter as well, but only fill the cupcake tins with about one teaspoon of chocolate batter each.
Slice the cooled white cupcakes in half horizontally to make two “buns” from each cupcake. Place one of the small chocolate cakes on top of the bottom half of the white cupcake. Pipe on frosting tinted red and yellow to resemble ketchup and mustard. Place the top half of the white cupcake atop the frosted chocolate half.
If desired, moisten the tops of the “burgers” with a bit of juice and sprinkle just a few sesame seeds to complete the look. The seeds have very little flavor and can be the perfect finishing touch.
Corn on the Cob
Another barbecue-friendly idea is to make your cupcakes look like corn on the cob, complete with pats of butter on top.
Simply frost the cupcakes with white or yellow frosting and then create rows of “corn kernels” using varying shades of yellow jellybeans. Melt yellow fruit chew candies in the microwaves for 5 to 10 seconds until softened and place them atop each cupcake to resemble butter.
If desired, you can even poke corn holders into the sides of the cupcakes.
Round out your picnic with cupcakes made to look like watermelons. Back the cakes in green liners or, if desired, green ice cream cones. Frost the cupcakes with pink frosting, roll the edges in green jimmies or sprinkles and dot the tops with mini chocolate chips.
Large American Flag
It doesn’t get much easier -or more patriotic-than this. Make two dozen cupcakes. Frost nine of the cupcakes with frosting tinted red and frost the remaining cupcakes with white frosting. Decorate six of the white frosted cakes with blue star-shaped sprinkles or blue jimmies.
Line six white cupcakes across the bottom of a platter. Next, make a row of six red cupcakes. The third row will consist of three of the cakes with blue sprinkles followed by the three remaining white cupcakes. Finally, place the three remaining blue cupcakes and then the three red cakes as the top row.
Another idea is to make a flag design on each individual cupcake. Frost the cupcakes with white frosting. Pipe red stripes across the tops of the cakes and dot with blue icing in the upper-left corner.
Cupcakes are inherently fun, and adding your own spin to them will make them the perfect dessert for your Memorial Day get-together.
