We’ve all been there as kids. I dare you to eat (insert gross thing here) was a common phrase heard countless times and included tons of things like grass, dogfood, and crayons. Now that we’re older we’ve evolved and instead of eating random items we have a whole spectrum of weird and gross foods to chose from. These are great for your next party or to see how bold your friends really are. Here are some that I’ve tried, and one I haven’t, which might not be as terribly disgusting as you might think.
While we all know that soda comes in a huge range of flavors, bacon usually isn’t one that comes to mind. This soda used to be a rarity but lately I’ve seen more brands of this than ever before due to online marketing and in store novelty specials. Bacon is a popular flavor and along with soda you can find bacon ice cream, candy, and even vodka.
When I saw this for the first time I made a vow that this drink would never enter my mouth. Fast forward to a month later, and I was bullied in to trying this beverage by my so called friends. It’s actually not too bad. When you try this soda the smoky bacon flavor is apparent without being overpowering and the sweet after taste is somehow complimentary. I was surprised to find that it was actually likeable and finished the entire bottle.
While a spicy pepper may not be especially gross, they have gained a huge amount of popularity in the novelty food category. These have become extremely popular with groups of friends, including my own, who want to find out who can take the heat. According to Crazy Hot Seeds, a website dedicated to all things pepper, In 2014 the hottest recorded pepper is the Carolina Reaper ranking at 2,200,000 on the scoville scale. The peppers we tried were of the dried Bhut Jolokia (ghost) pepper variety and come in at 1,041,427 units on the scoville scale.
I cannot begin to describe the burn that started at around thirty seconds in and lasting for about a half hour but it felt like I had eaten coals straight from a fire, however, after the burn fades you actually start to get a natural high that makes your body feel pretty good. I was shocked to find that no liquid or food put a dent in this burn and despite the feeling afterwards, we probably won’t be trying this one again.
No, I’m not talking about being stranded on an Island and eating crickets to survive Bear Grylls style. In today’s world not only do insects come in candied form but are consumed as snacks, this process is called Entomophagy. Research from the website Insects Are Foods states Entomophagy is the process of eating insects or arachnids like spiders, scorpions, ants, and crickets. These are generally available from specialty stores or online.
This is one that I personally had to build up to trying for a long time, but like the bacon soda was surprised at how much different dried ants tasted than I originally thought. I was the only participant in trying this one and only after I had a beer or two in my stomach could I handle crunching down. Once you put the thought of what It is from your mind, the overall flavor is mildly nutty, crunchy, and only slightly bitter. I won’t be eating these as part of a meal anytime soon but it was a quite unique experience.
If you’re a daredevil and your always up for a new experience then Fugu, or pufferfish, may be one for you to try. This fish is notoriously from Japan and produces a toxin within it’s body that, Facts and Details website says, is hundreds of times more powerful than poisons like cyanide or strychnine. While just a trace of this can kill an adult man quickly it is said that the best Fugu chefs will leave a miniscule amount to make the lips tingle, allowing the eater to feel their mortality.
If your an adventurous eater then prepare to make a trip to get it if you don’t live near a major city. I tried this for the first time last year at Tako Grill in Bethesda, MD. I did get a small bit of a tingle in my tongue and lips and was surprised how delicious this fish was. It’s hard to describe after only one tasting, but the texture is somehow both chewy and crunchy and it has a taste akin to soft chicken with very little of the fishy aftertaste most seafood has.
This drink is often called nutrition of the future. It’s a drink that contains every aspect of nutrition that a person needs to survive and thrive. Some testing has shown that these mixtures offer health benefits like energy and weight loss while feeling more full over a long period of time. In an interview from Time.com, a software developer by the name of Rob Rhinehart shared that he had gone 5 months surviving solely on this concoction apart from the odd meal on the weekend. Not only could this be of benefit for many here but it could help aid millions in developing countries.
