Creating an effective character in 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) isn’t just about combining a good mix of attributes, powers, feats, race, class, and skills. A truly effective character also needs the right selection of magic items to synergize with the character’s build. Inefficient or useless magic items can make a character surprisingly weak, while powerful and efficient magic items can greatly increase the effectiveness of a character. Presented are some of the best magic items for making an effective 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons warlord.
Helm of Heroes – Roughly half of warlord powers provide a basic attack to an ally. This magic item allows that basic attack to be a standard action once per day and also provides a saving throw benefit against fear effects.
Shield of Deflection – Warlords have incredibly limited ability to fight at range. By providing damage reduction against ranged damage, this shield forces the enemy to face the warlord in melee combat.
Battlestrider Greaves – Most warlords will wear heavy armor. These greaves will give the warlord the necessary additional movement to always use powers from the most tactical position possible.
Brooch of Vitality – For melee combatants, warlords tend to have relatively low hit points. This brooch will help resolve some that flaw slightly.
Exalted Armor – Despite the name, this armor is just as effective at increasing warlord healing powers as cleric healing powers. For warlords with a high charisma, this armor will greatly improve the warlord’s limited healing.
Communal Weapon – Warlords will generally not need a weapon that improves the warlord’s attacks. Instead, this weapon that can turn an ally miss into a hit or allow an ally to succeed at a saving throw is a much better choice.
Inspiring Weapon – For a warlord in a party with a lot of melee combatants, this weapon is a great way to deal a lot of additional damage quickly. This is especially effective on a reach weapon and with allies who make multiple attacks.
Gauntlets of the Ram – Warlords have an at-will power that can push an enemy and then allow an ally to make a basic attack against the enemy. These gloves will increase the distance of that push, giving the warlord greatly increased flexibility in using this power.
Proper selection of magic items is all about choosing magic items that work best with the strengths of the characters. Warlords specialize in providing tactical support for allies by giving allies the ability to attack and moving allies around the battlefield. This short list of magic items will give your warlord a powerful advantage in any 4th edition D&D campaign.
