Interior redesign is the art of using your existing furnishings and accessories in new ways to give your room a fresh and exciting look. Follow these 4 steps to redesign and breathe new life into a tired space.
1. Start with a blank slate. By emptying the room of furniture and accessories, you can see the empty room with fresh eyes. What is the natural focal point you want to design your room around? Do you have an amazing view you want to highlight or perhaps a fireplace? Do you have a TV that demands center stage, or can conversation be the main purpose of the space? Decide on a focal point and the desired use of the room, and you’re ready to move on to the next step.
2. Place furniture with the focal point in mind. Many of us grew up with furniture pushed against the walls. Avoid the bowling alley effect by pulling your large furniture pieces away from the walls and into the room. Anchor your seating area with an area rug for added interest. Console tables behind sofas are a great way to add interest and additional lighting to a seating area. Don’t be afraid to angle your large furniture pieces to make the arrangement even more interesting. Is conversation the main goal of the room? Sofas pulled away from the walls and across from each other encourage long chats.
3. Hang wall decor. Most people hang their wall decor too high. Wall hangings should be at eye level for maximum enjoyment. Be creative with your groupings. Browse design magazines or explore online sites for fresh ideas on how to group and display wall decor.
4. Accessorize. This is what I call the jewelry of the room. Proper accessorizing can really give a room personality and make your design come alive. Rethink all of your accessories. Don’t place an item somewhere because that is where it has always gone. Shop other rooms in your house and mix things up. Think of accessorizing as a way to highlight objects you love and not just to fill space.
Enjoy your “new” room!
